Jumbo Dexter

I'm pretty sure this confirms that Dexter is indeed

I've only had him for two years. He was pretty large already when I got him. So far he's had two-three molts with me. He goes down around August and comes up a few months later. Let's hope for many more years of successful molts!

Your crabbie is big, no doubt. But your chart looks a little off to me compared to the paper (assuming it's a standard sized piece of paper). Might just be the angle or the paper or whatever though. Here's a pic of how the chart printed out for me.

Please excuse the messy looking paper. I've had it for a few years now and never got around to covering it.

It's easy to check if you printed it to the correct scale just by measuring the circle diameters.
Micro circle .5"
Teeny circle 1"
Small circle 1.5"
Medium circle 2.5"
Large circle 3"
Jumbo over 3"

I hope this helps

Hmm I guess mine does look a little smaller. I tried finding the other one I printed out years ago, but must have thrown it away in the move last year.

But yes, either way he's a huge crab

Doh! I don't know why I never thought to measure mine. LucasBinx's is a tiny bit small, mine printed too large. I've been using this same chart for years. This explains so much.

EDIT: I just triple checked every circle and the only one off is the large circle. Weird.

Wow - what are the dimentions on the opening to Dexter's shell....just curious?

I would say Dexter is a true Jumbo based on him sitting on your hand. If you can get him to stand normally by the ruler it would give the same measurements as the bullseye (measuring between the legs). Do you have a baseball around? You could compare him to the size of a baseball too.

Dexter is amazing! I hope my bigger crabs molt so successfully and get his size in a couple of years.

I actually conveniently took a picture of the opening already, just didn't post it

Your bigg'un is about the same size as mine. I've not yet printed the chart, but from the opening and the hand picture, they look about the same range. What a beauty.

It's amazing how relative perspectives of size can be. I know that, by the chart, I have 3 large, 3 jumbo, and 1 extra jumbo (what I might call your guy, if we estimated another ring of approximately the same growth), but when it comes time to grab shells, I still think of them all as small, medium, and large. It's so much easier that way.

Hey, has anyone ever thought of updating the chart with extra size classifications?

;)
