Hamster wheel

Post by Kermie16 » Sat Dec 03, 2016 5:32 pm

So I've had my hamster wheel set up for about a week now and the only time I see it move is when the crabs are trying to get by it by going under it Image - no fun for me (Image). So I'm wondering how low you guys have ur hamster wheels set up in the tat that ur hermies get on it or does it really matter? Mine is about a little less than an inch from the sub.

My crabs are too lazy for that. Lol. They'd be turning it over. Have you put some food in it?

Nope. But tonight I put the large shell we use for food right next to it. It's like a tiny step to get on it.

You gotta lure them sometimes. I hope it works!

Mine hang near the top of my tank, and I have one pine cone in front of it for them to climb to step into it. This prevents crabs from climbing on the wheel from other things, and from going under it while it is in use. Took my crabs one day! I'd say mine is a good 3 inches off of the sub. Hope that helps.

I didn't lure my crabs with anything, they figured it out on their own and use it constantly! I have two wheels. . One definitely gets used more than the other.

Thanks, GotButterflies! I think I will try a little of both suggestions:) I will put a bit of food in the tat and also put something nearby for them to climb on like a small piece of cholla or something.

Nope :/ Little boogers. Unless they are on it between 3 and 5 am. Otherwise I got nothing. I put a large seashell next to it so it is just like a millimeter below where they would need to step. I also put a walnut and raspberry in there - no takers for 2 days. They keep going under it though- I've seen that plenty of times.

It takes weeks for my guys to get up the nerve to do new stuff. I move stuff around in hopes it becomes new to them. My guys are dangers not walkers. I imagine tgem digging it half down into the sub and sitting on the highest point. They're buggers.

Interesting. Is the wheel too big or too heavy for your crabs? I noticed my 2nd wheel doesn't get used as much as the first, so I had cut some of the craft mesh off to make it a little lighter. I also have bought a different kind, but haven't switched it out yet. The one that gets used all of the time has sand in it, and occasionally poop. Lol!

I'm not sure. I haven't seen any trying it out at all. Just scurrying and digging under it. I'm going to keep it in because I'm hoping our spidey crab Chime will finish his molt soon (it's been 4 months now ) and he is basically our fearless crab that likes to climb anything and everything:) If this doesn't work, I might give the saucer thing a try. We'll see! I'm still hopeful:)
