The Menagerie

Since I'm home sick, figured I'd post some photos of my crew.

Image
Drake, my very suave male. Only male in the tank, lucky boy. He's the boldest of the crabs and will take food from my fingers. He's a very hungry boy and always first to the food bowl. He's my fave, such a personable guy. Gets along with everybody so well, but doesn't take any crap either. Good creb.

Image
Amelia, my big girl. She's down molting again right now, but she's my largest crab and my other favorite. All the other crabs love her and follow her around, trying to snuggle. They all gravitate towards the Queen Crab.

Image
Darwin, my stubborn, grumpy girl. She likes to try and boss the other crabs around, but only succeeds with the tiny ones.

Image
Jules, my first crab. She's steadily grown more and more purple as time goes by. She's down molting right now, but expected back any day.

Image
Horner, one of my two very shy Es. Quick little girl, usually all I see of her is a quick flash as she runs away.

Image
Anning, my other E. I spotted her just the other day, but both my Es are very shy and I rarely see either of them.

Image
Carson, one of my two tiny girls. She's also very shy and I rarely see her. This photo was the first night she came home, missing a leg (which she later regrew). She's shy, but also feisty if caught. Last time I had to move her, she was doing her darnedest to pinch me. Tiny little powerhouse!

Image
Beebe, the other itty bitty girl. Both she and Carson came home together and had been kept with no food for weeks at the pet store (despite my numerous complaints to the management to provide them with food). Finally, I just gave up and brought them home. She's the shyest of all my crabs and seeing her is a rare event. This was her the first night she was home, eating faster than any crab I'd ever seen.

Image
And the crew at large. Jules climbing around, Horner hiding out in the bushes, and Drake (as usual) stuffing his face in the food bowl. :D

They're all gorgeous! I also like all the foliage. How do you know who's who after shell changes? I've given up on trying to figure mine out.

Thank you! :D I love my little critter crew.

The PPs are all pretty easy to tell apart. Either by coloration & size or by personality. Personality-wise, they're all very distinctive. So it's fairly easy to tell them all apart just by their behavior. And except for the two tiny girls and Drake & Jules, they're all well distributed across different sizes. Drake and Jules are the same size, but drastically different in color and behavior. And the two little girls look very similar, but Beebe has a distinctive white patch on her big claw. She's also super shy and will hide for a long time if startled. Conversely, Carson is shy.. but if cornered she'll try to pinch rather than hide. I've gotten to know them all very well, though, so they're easy to identify.

The two Es are way harder, though. They're both about the same size and about the same color. The black markings on their sides are very slightly different. And Horner is very slightly larger. But I see them so seldom that it's hard to really learn what their personalities are like. So otherwise, I just try to keep track of who is wearing what and hope for the best.

Awwww, I love your little gang! Especially the Es! :D I so want some, but alas, my tank is too small. :( I'm living vicariously through everyone else!

Thank you! :D

I happened to stumble across a shipment of Es at Petco at just the right time when I had space in the big tank. It's interesting to see how different they are from the PPs. I just wish I got to see them more often! They're SO shy!

They're all really cute. I adopted 5 crabs and they all turned out to be the same size, imagine that! It makes them really hard to tell apart. Honestly there is only one that I can reliably pick out from the others, and mostly because he is a smidge bigger and always hangs out in the same exact spot during the day. I love them though I do wish they looked a lil more different.

It’s really easy for me to tell my crabs apart, they all look different, judging by looks, and body build.

Beautiful crabs! I really wish I could take good photos of my tank, but my iPad doesn’t have a great camera on it.

I totally agree with you. I have 6 and the most recent changed shells. I don't know what he picked. So now his name is useless.

Haha yeah when I first brought them all home I spent alot of time trying to decide on names but then I just realized there wasn't really much of a point since I couldn't tell which was which once they changed shells. They are all Creb.

Sorry for the late reply! It's a 65gal. My little slice of crab paradise. ;)

And thank you all! I love my little colony of critters. They're such lovely, fun little crabs. :D

I take most of my photos with my dive camera, a SeaLife DC2000. It's just a point and shoot, but it honestly does better work than my big professional Nikon DSLR when it comes to shooting the crabs. I keep it right next to the tank and it's easy to just grab it, open the lid, and snap a few quick photos. Trying to get the Nikon ready is a good 5-10 minute prep and by then the fun stuff is over. :hlol:
