3rd Time's the Charm

Post by bandaidstealer » Fri Jul 20, 2018 9:06 pm

I used tinypic.com this time. *crosses fingers*

The first picture is the 10g Crabitat we started setting up for the rescues. I know I still need some more supplies and we are getting them slowly. We sort of ended up with the two hermit crabs because my husband didn't want to see them tossed in the dumpster behind the building he works in.

This is baby camouflage (although he is in the bigger of the shells now). When we got him he was in a painted shell far too small and my son named him baby camouflage because his shell was smaller.

And big camouflage is now the smaller of the two. He switched out of his painted shell into a green turbo.

Sorry the pictures are a little blurry. I'm still getting the handle on this!

Welcome to the HCA!

Great pics!

So, a few things. Substrate needs to be at least 6" or three times the height of your largest crab. Whichever is deeper wins. :)

Edit; Oops, hit submit. I don't see extra shells, or a fw and msw pool :)

shells are in the back in a small tupperware container, fw and sw is in shells for now, ordering some hermit crab lagoons from amazon on payday.

when im looking for more substrate, is it better to have sand and the dirt like substance, or should i stick wirh just one?

Honestly, don't waste your money on those hermit crab lagoons. Just buy some cheap tupperware containers. check out this link:

For substrate - use playsand and eco earth or mix it. You can keep it separate like you have it, but eventually the hermits will mix it :) Mix it with dechlorinated fw or dechlorinated msw to make it sandcastle consistency. Do not use regular dirt.

I personally mix mine. It really just boils down to personally preference. :)

Your hermies r cuties!! Wonderful rescue! I agree with GB with the above posts. The hermies dirty the pools frequently. I change out he water in both pools once a week and it is very helpful that each pool Tupperware is nested in each other Incase there is a molten under the pools - which mine like to do I guess because of the increased moisture
Around there - when I take out the pools, the bottom Tupperware protects the sub from being disturbed and potentially either exposing a molter or collapsing a molter’s cave. Looking forward to more pictures :)

More pictures! (hopefully better than last time!)

Baby Camoflauge changed shells last night. Woke up this morning to see him in his favorite daytime sleepy spot, but with a new shell! Super happy he upgraded since his previous shell was a little small. The top back left corner of the tank on top of all the leaves is his favorite spot to sleep during the day. But at night he is the more active of the two, I always find him eating food, chilling out in a water dish, or climbing up the coco-fiber background.

He is also the one who makes all these messes, dragging food all across the tank and filling the water dishes with dirt.
