HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I'm currently migrating our crabs. They've been alive roughly 3 years. The first house was a 3 foot x 2 foot home. It had 30" above sand to climb. They did have a lot more shells to choose from but I'm getting the new house setup for the move.

The new crabitat is deeper with sand. It's the same climbing height but is 5 foot x 2 foot long... so it's 2 feet wider. It will have more shells and more things to climb once I'm done setting up. It should be this weekend.

While its a great idea, depending on your location it may not be warm/humid enough - even in your home! - to keep the crabs comfortable long term.

No hate, but it may not be an optimum for the little guys.

They were in the little one for over 3 years now. The plexiglass around the sides and top keep the humidity just like an aquarium.

Humidifiers would definitely work with the humidity.

Humidity shows 88%. It has a foot of wet sand across the bottom and big water areas. Temp shows 80. They are good. I think you may just be hung up on it not being an aquarium and that's what you're used to. The plexiglass works the same and has the same effect.

It's actually kind of hard to tell in the second picture that the sides have plexiglass. Is the sand wet or moistened to sandcastle consistency?

Sandcastle. It's general purpose, out of the bag, sand. Just pointing out again how I've kept them alive for over 3 years. They've all molted more than once. They've changed shells. They're active. They seem happy.

I posted the pictures mostly to give people an idea besides an aquarium. The aquarium is probably cheaper... plexiglass that size is expensive... but I like it better because they can climb all the sides and the roof instead of just things I place in the middle. They love to clump together on the walls which they can't do on a normal aquarium. We call it "crabby parties" with my kid.

The new one came a pretty decent way. Leaves, moss, shells, extra climbing things in the middle, etc. It's looking pretty sharp at this point!

When the sand starts to dry at the top I add some more water. I've been successful having that process and only have to re-wet the sand about once a month. I use bottled water.
