Show chickens - 4H

Post by jenok » Sat Sep 13, 2014 5:32 am

I used to be in 4-H when I was younger and did a lot of things like showing goats and entered multiple things in the county fair most of them doing pretty good and placing. Well earlier this year we bought some chicks to raise for eggs but also I got some bantams. Haley (my daughter) showed some interest but not a lot so I told her then that if she wanted she could enter them and show at the fair. She didn't really say anything until a couple weeks ago she brought home the 4-H enrollment form from school wanting to be in 4-H. So she is now in 4-H and last night was the day that the chickens showed. I let her take the 2 bantams and we looked until we finally figured out what breed and she showed last night. Both chickens placed 2nd which I thought was really good since she had never shown and we didn't properly get them ready for the show with the exception of a bath. I was/am so proud of her. She paid attention watching the showmanship class (she didn't enter) so she would know at least a little of what to do when her turn came and for next year if she wanted to enter. We watched the whole show/all classes to learn and when it was her turn for not having any prior experience she did really well even better then a few others that had done it before. Some of the older kids congratulated her and told her she did really good which meant a lot to her and made her evening. With a little persuasion from me she even went out and helped one of the other older kids that had multiple chickens go up at the same time for grand and reserve grand large breed and was thanked for doing so. So Proud! Well up till now I've bragged on her now I guess I should give the chickens some credit. Both chickens were held quite a bit when they were little but not a lot when they went outside to their big pen. They both behaved really good for their first time too. Even quite a bit better than some of the others being shown which I think helped out a lot so I'm very proud of them too.I think she wants to continue showing so we will work with the chickens some more and her showmanship skills and we were even told about another side/separate group that helps show the kids how to show and even puts on a few shows for the kids.
