Quail and chickens
Quail and chickens
Well the baby chicks/chickens we got earlier this year have started laying finally. Unfortunately not all, I have 2 roosters and 7 hens getting 4-5 eggs a day. I think I should get rid of 1 of the roosters and the smallest bantam since it gets picked on but I'm torn between making them dinner or selling. Also I like the bigger rooster better but have not seen him mate with any of the hens only the smaller one. I will probably post them for sale on craigslist and if no one wants them they'll become dinner.I have another batch of quail chicks hatching so far this batch is hatching better than the last though they are a tad later than I expected. I had 80 developing eggs and so far since last night 15 have hatched with no problems and I noticed several more starting to before I left this morning. I shall have to wait patiently to see if all 80 hatch or not if less than 70 hatch I am going to have to figure out what I'm doing wrong.I have sold some quail this year but not as many as I had hoped for. If this batch doesn't sell I will probably keep some for breed stock next year and the others will go for dinner. Then I will hatch another batch probably to release if they don't sell maybe I can get the wild population back up to some extent. I have seen a few wild ones come to my pens looking for mates and have released a few to go with them. We shall see what happens in the next few years.

Quail and chickens
My son's chickens are laying now to. He has 1 rooster. He had 2 when they were chicks but one died. He can go in the pen and say 're you hungry? And they will fly up nd Land on his shoulders, he bends down and pets them nd says shhhhh then picks them up and pets them. They follow him around like a lost puppy.

We played with them when they were young but they never really tamed as much as your son's did. I can pet them on the roost and get close to them but they don't like it. I occasionally let the chickens out of the pen but usually have to chase them back in. Once I left them out for a long time and they found some brush to hang out in it was almost impossible to get them back to the pen (I had to call in reinforcements to help ).
