Cloudy glass

Post by Kryorke » Wed Jan 29, 2014 5:31 am

Hi all, just a quick question here. In November I purchased a used glass aquarium. It had a ring of calcium/ lime on the inside. I tried scrubbing it with hot water, to no avail. Several sites said vinegar or a chemical cleaner, but I was uncomfortable using that. I finally settled on lemon juice, which seemed to do the trick. The last 2-3 weeks I noticed that the glass has a cloudy film building up on it (it's not humidity). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean this off? I thought maybe clearing out my tat's 'furniture'and trying a baking soda paste- being extremely careful to not get any on the sub. Any other ideas? Thanks!!

Personal opinion would be to either take a wash cloth with hot water and wipe the sides off and see if that helps or take everything out sub included and do your lemon thing again making sure to rinse well. I would think that it being cloudy means there is still residue left on the glass. Vinegar shouldn't hurt either as long as you rinse very well and there is no smell detected. Maybe rinse, fill/soak, empty/drain, rinse again. Use a clean cloth during the rinsing process. Baking soda may also work but I would once again take everything out. Let me know if that helps/works.

@Kryorke, all hermitcrab enclosures develope a hazing on the glass after while and this is a mix of hardwater deposits from misting and oils from the crabs they make contact with the glass. The best method for removing this haze is papertowles and dechlorinated water.Just spray the glass and wipe it down and the haze should come off quite easily.

Scraping the glass carefully with a flat-out razor blade actually does the trick for severe cases. Wiping it with some distilled water, mixed with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, lime juice and vinegar also does the trick
