New owner, IDK if crab is sick

Post by JulieK0311 » Fri Aug 05, 2016 6:59 am

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
6" deep mix of play sand and coconut fiber (50/50)

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
Yes - temp ~72, humidity ~80%

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
No - temp holding steady in mid 70s

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Fresh water (bottled distilled) and salt water made from drops & distilled water

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
Commercial dry mix and various treats from Hermit Crab Patch (fruit mix, fish, chicken), fed out of washed bottle caps

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
3 weeks, 2 purple pincers

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
No

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
10 gal aquarium, mesh lid with plastic wrap covering

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
2 - medium sized

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
3 extra shells (no interest shown)

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
No

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
Wiped out glass with damp cloth, remove debris from substrate mix

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
No

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
Cholla wood (which got moldy and took out), hemp climbing net (soaked in water and sun dried), dried moss

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
Taken out daily to play (gently), spray with water bottle every other day, only bathed 3 times over 3 weeks

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
Several things, not sure what I'm doing wrong as a new owner. Thought I was following all the directions :(

1 crab (which used to be sprightly and playful) now doesn't want to come out of shell when picked up, doesn't move around the cage much, doesn't climb, occasionally peeks out but just sits in the same spot (not buried, just on surface). Tried to give it a bath yesterday but then when I put back in the cage, one of his legs fell off (walking leg, not claw). Not sure if I should just leave him alone, isolate him, do anything?? We're brand new crabby parents and I'd be so sad to lose one after only 3 weeks.

Other crab seems to be doing ok but neither crab seems to be eating anything! I've tried a variety of fruits and proteins but nothing seems to be enticing. I saw one crab look like he was eating something off the side of the tank wall. Neither seems to show any interest in food of any kind.

Temps are too cool, they need 80-85 degrees. Eating: they are nocturnal and eat tiny amounts, so you may not see it. Also, as they get warmer and acclimated to their new home (when they're warmer) they may eat more. Mine go through phases of eating like crazy, and where I think i throw away all their food every morning.

More experienced grabbers may have more insight.

Also, they probably shouldn't be handled and bathed much. They need down time to adjust and destress.

Hi! I am not able to be online for long right now but there are several areas of concern.

Please read the care guides thoroughly and ask any further questions you may have.

Oh no :( This sounds exactly like what's going on:

"Symptoms include leg loss, lethargy, not eating, not responding, slowing down, sitting in one location for days at a time."

I have put her in an Iso tank now since she isn't buried and I just introduced 2 new crabs so I don't want them going after her while she's vulnerable. She hasn't budged from where she's laying for 3 days. Yesterday I saw her move a leg a tiny bit when I came close so I know she's still alive. Is there anything else that I can do or just wait and see? Is death likely at this point? I feel terrible.

Don't feel bad, this isn't your fault! my first crab experience was terrible, I didn't do any research... I bet 99% of the community has had crabs with PPS. I'm not experienced with ISOs so a mod can help you there. If it were me I would just try to avoid handling and see if they improve. Good luck!

Provide good conditions and healing food like raw honey and all natural peanut butter. If the limbs have dropped you can put some one the head of a qtip and put it near the crabs face. Crushed eggshell is also a good addition to this mixture.

I've read on many theads that 72-80 is acceptable 72 may be the lowest you could comfortably go but it is acceptable my 20g long stays between 72-75f

May a mod correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that's too cold. I think it needs to be at least 75 or else crabs will go into a sluggish state. And sometimes if conditions are wrong crabs will dig to destress

We recommend a minimum temp of 80 degrees.

The weather in their natural habitat is, on average, in the mid 80's year round.

Yes, they may survive for a while at lower temps, but this affects their growth rate and can cause them to shut down or experience organ failure if kept at too low temps for a prolonged period of time.

Since they can live for over 20-30 years in captivity with good care, it is important to provide them with the best conditions possible, that most closely approximate their natural habitat.
