New terrarium moss... making my tank smell like a swamp?

Hey Guys
So I recently went to Petland and bought some supplies for my tank. Sand, Moss etc etc. Well, I got what was called "terrarium moss" it looked like it was used for frogs, turtles, lizards and other reptiles and amphibians. But I decided that it was probably safe for my hermit crabs. I made a moss pit around the hut and since then, the tank has smelled like a swamp! I guess I could compare it to the smell of a ditch on the road during the wet spring season. ! Is there a way I could make it smell better?

Mine smells like that too. I kinda like it. I don't know how to make it better without fumes which could hurt the crabs

If you got the greenish stuff that sort of looks like a teeny tree & and comes in clumps with a bit of dirt at the base, that's commonly called frog moss. In my experience it is the smelliest of the commonly sold pet store mosses. The smell will lessen with time but never completely dissappear.

Sphagnum is less smelly.

Lol! Funny! I use spaghnum moss. I wet it with dechlorinated water, I like the smell.

I think mine smells like that too and its spaghum. I have a pretty sensitive nose though...lol

I posted last year about my tank smelling like earth/dirt when I added the spahgnum moss too, then I changed it to the flukers long moss, with the dirt on it, and that stuff sucked big time the crabs had a hard time trying to bury in it, they couldn't, so I changed it to green moss and that smells too but the crabs love it. I think it's just moss smells

Actually guys I was just adding more today and it says it is sphagnum moss.... My nose is very sensitive tho!

I have that kind of moss and my tank smells like the bottom of a forest floor. It's dank, dark, and wet-smelling. It's not what I'd call a pleasant odor but it is a very natural smell. If your tank smells like a swamp or a forest... I think you're doing it right.
