Heat Pad Questions

Post by DreaminginBlue » Mon Mar 27, 2017 1:26 pm

What brand of heat pad is the best? I've seen a few people recommending Ultratherms, so I'm leaning towards on of those.
In addition, I known I need to mount it on the side of the tank, but do I mount it so it covers half the wall, or the whole thing?
Thanks,

Ulrtatherms! :)
Should cover the whole back and right above the substrate.
So I have a 55 gallon, Measuring 48 x16 so I got the 47x11 pad :)
I love it! Prefect heating on my tank and I live in cold oregon.

Thanks guys,I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!
Just one last question... can I do some sort of background with a heat pad, or no? I was thinking of maybe putting it on the inside of the tank?

Yes, you can with ultratherms

Edit: it can cut down on your heat though.

Okay, that might be a problem. Maybe I'll just go background-less and try to hide it with fake plants or whatnot.
I'm hoping to use the ultratherm when I (hopefully) upgrade in about a week. I currently have a zoomed and really don't like it, it doesn't keep the tank warm enough at all.
This might have something to do with the tank being by a window, though... but there's nowhere else that I can put the crabitat. Should I get a higher wattage heater than normal, or put a blanket or something similar over the window to insulate it?
I'll try to see if I can rearrange some furtniture and move the crabitat towards an inside wall or some similar location... but I don't think I'll have enough room there for it.
If only I had an extra room dedicated solely to my pets... we don't use the office much, that might be my summer project

You can insulate ultratherms with Reflectix or with aluminum foil and then cardboard or styrofoam. My crabitat that is by a window was 2 degrees less than my crabitat that is not by the window, so I put a larger one on it. I live in Florida, so I don't need the entire back covered with an uth. Gets pretty hot here. I only insulate my tanks for maybe two months every year. I personally use Reflectix. You can't insulate zoomeds, but you can insulate around them

Okay, thanks, I'll do that :)
What bigger size should I get for a 40 gallon breeder?
Sorry for the 101 questions, I just want to do right by my crabbies.

Colder climate I would go with 6x35. If warmer climate go with 6x23.

I'm in Northern California, it gets pretty hot in the summer but freezing in the winter sometimes.

Well, sounds like Florida (minus the freezing part) lol! That's why I use the reflectix as needed. Really easy to put up. Rolls up for storage.

Okie dokie, I think I'll get some of that and get a normal sized UTH then. How would one mount/use the reflectix? Could I just wrap it around the ultratherm?

You can use Reflectix tape, duct tape or packaging tape :)
