Oak tree
I thought i read somewhere that Oak branches and leaves are good for hermies to eat. Is that correct? Thanks
Re: Oak tree
Yes oak is safe as long as it hasn't been treated with fertilizer, pesticides, or sprayed for mosquitoes... My crabs love oak and maple bark/leaves!

Re: Oak tree
Mine seem to prefer browned, fallen leaves to fresh green ones. If you can, just go nuts harvesting in the fall. Bake it (for bugs you don't want in your house) and store for the winter.

How do you prepare oak tree bark for your hermit crabs? Do you just bake it or do you do something in addition to baking?daws409 wrote:Yes oak is safe as long as it hasn't been treated with fertilizer, pesticides, or sprayed for mosquitoes... My crabs love oak and maple bark/leaves!

Re: Oak tree
Some choose to bake and others choose to freeze. Both methods are effective at removing bugs... My pieces are between 3 and 4 foot long with a diameter of 4 to 8 inches. They wouldn't fit in my oven so I had to freeze them.
If baking, I would set oven to 300 (and leave the door ajar) and bake for 30 mins depending on size of piece. If freezing, I would freeze for 2-6 hours. This also depends on size and thickness of piece.

Edit: Guess I should have quoted since this isn't you're thread lol

Re: Oak tree
Freezing doesn't work on native species, many can survive cold temps.

Do they eat the bark or just the leaves?

Re: Oak tree
They. eat. everything.
I once asked my hubby to bring me back some leaves and branches from his mom's. He brought home a 4 foot long limb. My crabs turned it into toothpicks in just a couple of days! Doesn't matter if it's oak or maple.

Cool! I'm going to gather some up and build a natural, edible multi level structure.
