Crabitat Sand

Post by Hezekiah » Sun Jun 18, 2017 3:19 pm

Does anyone know of a good source for inexpensive sand? I would like to mix it with the coconut fiber that I already have. I saw calcium sand at Petco but I do not know if that is the right kind (or if there is a cheaper option). The only other source I could find is premixed sand substrate on The Hermit Crab Patch. My tank is ten gallons and does not have enough substrate right now. I cannot immediately add more because my crab is molting! Currently have only one purple pincher, but I am about to adopt another crab.

Do I have to wash it or anything first?

No. You will want to put conditioned water on the cocofiber too.

Calcium sand is the wrong kind to use for hermits anyway! It clumps up when they molt and can grow bacteria. Playsand is what you want, under 5 dollars for a 50 pound bag. One bag is a good amount for a 10 gallon and will make it half full.

I echo what everyone else said. Just wanted to add that it IS safe to add 1 inch per 24 hours. Just don't pack it down! ;)
