Will an exoterra work for hermit crabs

Post by Lewisthecrab » Wed Dec 13, 2017 10:45 am

I was wondering if an exoterra 18x18x24 inch exoterra terrarium would work for housing at least three hermit crabs. I'm worried about the humidity. :crabblush:

The concern with terrariums is the doors opening in the front. So you have to get a piece of plexiglass cut so that the substrate can be built up in the front and you can open the doors and the substrate not fall out on you. Do you understand what I mean? Substrate depth needs to be a minimum of 6" or three times the height of your largest crab. (whichever is deeper wins) So basically you cut a piece of plexiglass for the front so substrate can still be deep and you can open the doors. How many gallons is the terrarium? I personally like 5 gallons for each small/medium crab.

I merged your posts into this one topic. The terrarium would be better than having them all in one 5 gallon tank. The one 5 gallon tank would be overcrowded. As far as humidity, you can cover the top of the terrarium with press n seal, saran wrap or plexiglass as well :)

Thats a 32g tank, which would work perfectly for 3 crabs. You probably want more, but that can result in a premature upgrade since crabs do grow quickly.

(You probably find it too small once you get everything in, I'd personally recommend going a size up in lenght and/or height if funds support)

If you have the budget to allow it, I'd go for it. I personally love front opening tanks, they extremely easy to access.

Thanks for all the help! Yeah at this moment they're now in a 10 gallon and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you can put plexiglass in front of the doors. :cheer:

If you are buying new, for the price (depending on the store) you would be paying at least three to five times more than a similar sized 20 gallon tall and lid. I know it works out to more gallons, but the actual footprint, the amount of surface area, is similar to a 20 tall. The Exoterra are nice with the doors and look pretty, but they are not cost effective if that is an issue. I'm actually in the process of working on that size for my frog this week, and I got it used for $100 which was a great deal even though I had to replace the screening. I could have picked up something the same size in an aquarium with a lid for $20 used.
