Holes
There are dug out holes all over the crabitat. Almost no more walking around space. Is that ok?

Oh, I would never cover them. But I'm anxious to get a bigger tank. I'm working on getting a 90.GotButterflies wrote:Mine constantly use those holes! I do not recommend covering them

Re: Holes
I will cover holes if I know that both crabs are above ground. Like if I am cleaning bowls and putting them back in, I will fill in holes in order to put stuff back and not have it tip over.

No need to fill in holes or cover them. Crabs like to reuse tunnels

Definately! Although it may be awhile. I'm not sure I'll have the money right away to set it up. How many crabs do you have in there? And how deep is your substrate?

Re: Holes
I have seven crabs: mostly mediums, with one itty bitty smol one, and one who'll likely be a large if his next moult goes well.
I've about 10" of sub. In a few places it's settled down to 9", and it's been set up for almost a month.
I want a bit deeper (planed on a foot) but had a cracked rib while setting up, so by the time I got to 10" deep I was like, "whelp, that is quite enough sand for you, crabs. Have fun."
I decided (as per recommendations from folks on this site) to start with sand a little dryer than I have with setups in the past, in ordr to help reduce the chance of developing excess moisture in such a large volume of sand - i really dont want to deal with a flood. So far it's working really well, and not drying out at all, even though my external humidity gets super low.

Do you worry about too dry sand? I just read on another thread about adding water, a gallon sometimes. That would freak me out if I had to do that.LadyJinglyJones wrote:I have seven crabs: mostly mediums, with one itty bitty smol one, and one who'll likely be a large if his next moult goes well.

Re: Holes
Larger crabitats tend to be more stable. The volume of sand in a 90 (I think I used about 350 lbs. of sand, though I will add more in the future) takes a long time to dry out.
Also, I have bubblers in both the salt and fresh pools (each of which holds a bit over a quart of water), and plexiglass for my lid. My humidity only creeps down to 75% when I've had the lid open for a bit. In spite of dry air (25% in my living room - which is much better than it used to be! Yaaaay humidifiers!) the relative humidity in the tank is pretty stable. That helps prevent the sand drying out.
I'd rather have to add water to moisten the sub than dig down & deal with a flood or bacterial bloom.

Nice to know the larger crabitats are usually more stable. Would you suggest more ee than the 5:1 sand/ee mix?LadyJinglyJones wrote:Larger crabitats tend to be more stable. Re: Holes
I don't think more ee is necessary. I used two bricks and seven bags of sand, so that was a little more than the 5:1 ratio - but there wasn't a particular reason for doing so, just that that was what I had purchased. I'm not super fussy about the ratio, an approximate will do.

Re: Holes
I'm getting the 90 gallon this Thurs. What size UTH'S do you use? I ordered 2 11x23 ultratherms. But they won't get here till next Friday. I'm not very patient. I also got larger pools. I'm using small paint trays now but 2 of my guys must have had a good molt they're huge. Lol. So I need deeper pools. Would I need to glue down the small stones I put on the bottom or is it ok if they're loose? Would they still get traction?LadyJinglyJones wrote:Larger crabitats tend to be more stable.
