Bad day...

Post by hermitcrabdc » Wed Jan 03, 2018 1:00 pm

It's been a bad day for crabbie land over here to say the least :(
I've been gathering some things for a tank renovation, and I was about to head out to walmart to get the last few things. Then I peeked in the tank to see what the crabbies were up to.
Well, as it turns out, only one was up to anything. I first saw a crab laying naked, and dried out, his shell no where to be seen. It was Devise, and I'm honestly devastated. As it turns out, Luca decided he wanted Devise's shell (even though it's too small for him) and Devise ended up dead over it. Then as I was assessing this case, I see Sapphire laying limp in her shell. She's usually very shy and I was surprised that she wasn't retracting into her shell. I gave her a few minutes before I started lightly tapping on her shell. Bad idea. She completely fell forward out of the shell, limp and dead.
So long story short, I'm down to one crab who seemingly murdered another one. It's been so long since I've had to deal with something like this in the tank that I don't even know what to do. I'm down to one crab and I thought about just going to get him a companion. But he just killed a crab and I don't really feel like treating him to friends and new tank toys after that.
I've also thought about rehoming him and just starting fresh.
In the crab's defense, I've not given them the attention they need lately. I'm just behind, but I didn't think it would come to this.
Anyone have any advise? No one's been removed from the tank as of now, I'm still kinda getting over the shock :)

Oh dear! I am so sorry to read this sad news.
I see you are a moderator, so probably know more than I do.....but was there any change in the tank that may have brought on the behaviour? Were there enough shells to choose from, and he just decided he wanted an occupied one? How long had it been since you had changed out food and water?

Oh man...so sorry to hear this. Usually if there is an attack it is due to lack of shells, protein and or calcium. I would increase these things, and then perhaps wait until after his next molt and then get him a buddy. :) Whatever you choose, good luck!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

So sorry to hear this! :(
How long had you had these guys?

Just a thought... if I had two crabs die in rapid succession I might consider disease a possibility. It's one of those things we can never be sure of, right? It looks like Divise was shell jacked, but the shell may have been taken after death. I assume it hadn't been many days since you last checked up on them (I myself harass my crabs a lot more when I'm planning something new for their tank! )

If you do decide to get another crab, maybe give it a while, to be safer. There's no way to really know, of course, but I always consider it fishy if more than one animal passes in a really short time frame.

I'm so sorry. :( Even with good conditions and established crabs, deaths can happen. I have had several this year, I think due to them still playing catch up with stress and molting from the ant infestation since all my guys were huge. It can feel overwhelming and the questions start running through your head.

I would not place blame on your last one just yet. Take some time, try to work on that upgrade if you still feel up for it. Your lone hermie will love it and with more space and a little time to himself, trying again with new friends would not be a bad thing if you wanted to. We are around to help and adopt if it doesn't work out!

Now that I think about it, I guess it's been quite a while longer than I had thought since the last tank clean up. It just slips my mind and I never get around to it. I was planning on doing water changes today. I guess I went a day too late (I'm assuming this was all recent because I haven't smelled anything yet, which I'm not complaining about  )
I don't think a shell shortage would have been the issue, there are several options in there.
I had sapphire for a year or two and Devise for around five. It's just crazy that it came to this, Devise has been attacked so many times and I thought I had the problem fixed. I just didn't imagine this.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I want to get the tank back to a better status for the last crab, but it may take me a few days...
