New tank?
So, I have a 90 gal with 6 crabs. And also a 40b with 4. I saw for sale a used 75gal for $40. Ooohhhh. Very tempting. I asked my husband and he said yes, great deal. For a fish tank. Lol. That's his dream.

Re: New tank?
Ohh, either way it will be a great setup with fish (and maybe aquatic crabs) or just crabs. Could always donate the 40B to him and setup that 75g right?

Well, the 40b isn't for fish/water. Right? We decided to get it but for fish. He wants to do sharks...aussieJJDude wrote:Ohh, either way it will be a great setup with fish (and maybe aquatic crabs) or just crabs. Could always donate the 40B to him and setup that 75g right?

Edit: I just looked it up and a breeder tank can be used for fish. I remember when I got it, the cardboard wrapping on it said not for water. So...maybe we can switch.Hermiesguardian wrote:Well, the 40b isn't for fish/water. Right? We decided to get it but for fish. Re: New tank?
Breeders can be used for fish. Sounds like you got a reptile tank (40g breeder in size) instead of an aquarium (40g breeder). Basically the only difference is the size of glass used- thickness

Re: New tank?
Never use a reptile tank that has the water warnings for an aquarium! The reptile tanks are made with a thinner glass so they are easier to move and wash. They do not have the structural integrity to hold 40 gallons of water. The 40 gallon aquariums have extremely thick glass and weigh a ton - my husband HATES moving my 40 breeders, he says they are worse than a 55.

Re: New tank?
What kind of shark did he want to do? Balas need to be in schools of at least 6 so they are calm and comfortable, and get so large they need at least 150 gallons.

Wow. I have no idea and I'm sure he doesn't either. He hasn't done any research. It's just always been a dream of his to have a saltwater tank.wodesorel wrote:What kind of shark did he want to do? Re: New tank?
Bala sharks are freshwater, though I imagine any saltwater shark would also need lots of space.

Re: New tank?
Once he does some research into the time and excessive costs, he may just hand that tank over willingly! Have him join a good saltwater forum and research. (3reef and reef2reef have been around a long time and recently merged.) For a 75 from scratch, you're probably looking at $500 minimum in supplies and livestock just for a basic fish only tank. If he wants pretty corals, whooo.Hermiesguardian wrote:[

As for saltwater sharks in a 75, the answer is no. They are naturally a large species, and the smaller ones still get to multiple feet long. The smallest either need perfectly temperature cold water because of where they are from and/or they need a cylindrical tank since if sharks stop swimming they drown, and they can get caught in the corners. You'd be looking at a minimum 180G, preferably 300G or more, and I believe they also need specialized filtration because of how they breathe.
