Bullying question

Post by crabbycasey » Wed Nov 11, 2020 8:55 am

As some of you may know I recently adopted 3 PP, small/medium. Their names are Turbo (male), Sandy & Gary (female, male...and hard to tell apart). I already had 2 crabs, Hermione (female) and Flash (male). While they all seemed to get along fine at first, I’m noticing some picking on my little guy Flash. He and Turbo are the smallest. It is either (or both) Sandy or Gary doing the bullying. They only seem to bully Flash though. They don’t mess with Turbo because he was their previous tank mate. I think it’s mainly Sandy. She chases after him, climbs on him and wraps all her legs around him like she’s grappling with him. She always faces him and spreads her legs out (to look bigger?), seeming to challenge him. Poor little Flash is just going about his business and gets knocked off a rock or something. He was just starting to come out more and explore too (he had been de-stressing for a while after I bought him). I have them in a 40 gallon breeder and understand that’s plenty of room for them, also lots of food, shells, hides and climbs. In yall’s opinion, does bullying get better once they’ve been around each other a while...or realize there is no threat? Or should I expect this behavior to continue? Do want to mention that Flash is still in his painted shell (everyone else is wearing natural pants/dresses). Could Sandy want his shell maybe? How do I recognize if she’s trying to get him out and should I intervene? I’m very back and forth on this bc I don’t want anybody getting hurt. Also don’t want any of my hermies to feel unsafe in their own home. Any advice from the pros?

It sounds like they’re still trying to establish a pecking order. Have you tried dipping them in the freshwater? In many cases making them smell the same can help.

I meant to mention that, thank you...I did dip them in the freshwater, one at a time upon putting each of them in. Now, Flash did go in 2 days after everyone else because he had dug down in my old tank and I didn’t want to dig him up. Waited for him to come up and then gently placed him in the new tank after his freshwater dip and he scurried off to hide. Now that he’s coming out, he’s getting picked on. Worried it will make him go into hiding again and that he feels threatened.

It’s not going to work as well if Flash is dipped two days after since that makes him the odd one out.

Is there anything I can do from here that would make it better? Do you think the bullying will eventually subside? Image

Re-dipping everyone would be my next step. Generally, though, they’ll learn to tolerate each other.

I suppose that’s better than the grappling, lol. Thank you! I’ll try that next

Update Image

Early this morning, 2 of my newbies ganged up on little Flash again...with another rushing over to join in. It was the perfect opportunity to break things up and put them all in for a new freshwater dip! I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but Flash and one of the newbies are huddled up next to each other in a hide now. I can’t believe it! They either now smell alike...or bonded over their traumatic experience getting dipped together, lol. Either way, happy to see no bullying at the moment. Thank you, JoeHermits!
