Power Outage

Post by MaryJane » Mon Feb 15, 2021 2:43 pm

Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

Eco earth 6 in deep
2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

Usually 75 currently 50
3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?

Lamp on top and heat pad on side
4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Both fresh and salt. Spring water with seachem prime

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?

Food mix from Etsy seller
6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

1 crab 5 yrs 6 crabs 9 months all purple claw
7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?

A few crabs are currently molting
8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?

Eco terra 36x18
9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?

1 big crab and 6 small crabs
10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?

20
11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

No
12. How often do you clean the tank and how?

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

No
14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?

No
15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.

Living in Texas and having bad weather. Currently have an outage for over 4 hours. It’s really cold in the house and I have no electricity to keep my hermit crabs warm. Is there anything I can do?

Blankets. Any heavy blankets that you have. Put them over the tank. Ive done this during cold weather and it works.

If you have extra blankets and sheets, pile them all over the tank to hold in whatever heat is left. I had this same problem last year. I was about of electric for 2.5 days and the house went down to the low 60s. I ordered those "hot hands" packs that give off heat for up to 12 hours. I got them with same day shipping. I taped them all over my 2 hermit tanks and my fish tank. Then I piled blankets over top all of the tanks. That combination actually helped raise the temp in the tanks.

If you are not going to be there to be able to monitor the tank, you may be better off digging them up and taking them with you.
If your tank is already in the 50s, it is already too low and they are in danger of dying from the cold.

Edit - oops sorry, I thought you were the same person on the Facebook forum who is having to leave their house for a couple of days.

I’ve put blankets on the tank. If power isn’t back soon heat pack are a good idea. I wouldn’t be able to order them as mail is backed up because of the weather though

I believe hardware stores sell those hot packs too, if you are able to get out when the storm stops.
Do you have a gas/propane stove that works in power outages by any chance? You can always heat up water on the stove and put it in gallons or water bottles, then surround the tank with them. Unfortunately, I have an electric stove so that wasn't an option for me.
Good luck with everything!

Sadly I have an electric stove too. Roads are bad but if power doesn’t come back soon I might have to go check the hardware store for heat packs.

Yay!!!!
Hurry up and heat up some water on the stove if you can. You can put it aside if the power goes back out.
