Molting crab!

Post by Rissa » Mon Jun 17, 2024 8:28 am

Hi! So i recently go hermit crabs and I noticed one of my PPs had molted last night cause i found the shell and a hole going through it from him trying to eat his exoskeleton but thats not my concern my concern is that the new shell he went into is the EXACT SAME SIZE and I know this cause they were manufactured and we bought them from the same place and there’s no difference besides a little more chipping on the outter rim. Should I be worried? Google keeps telling me that since he shedded he’s a lot smaller now to so is that the case?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a hole in the shell? Or a manufactured shell? Or exactly what google is telling you?
Here is some info that I hope will help.

Crabs do not leave their shell when they molt. You should have enough moistened substrate (play sand, coco fiber) so that they can dig underground, and stay under for weeks to months while they molt.

Crabs don't always change shells before or after they molt. Crabs will sometimes molt without changing shells. And crabs will sometimes change shells without molting.

If you haven't had a look at our care sheets, I would suggest starting with the 'basics' one, and then go from there.
