my crabs are digging like never before!

Well, yes, I mean salt water, not saline. I'm not sure where my mind was. I have been using the ZooMed Salt Water conditioner, but I read that it wasn't effective, so I'm going to the pet store this weekend to get the aquarium stuff.

Saline is salt water, but the saline you get in an IV in the hospital usually also contains other compounds. It's what they give you when you're dehydrated and need to get both water and electrolytes.

Okay, jsut making sure, I recommend Red Ocean,Instant Ocean, or Oceanic salt water, and even API if they have it. You will find mixing instructions on the drop down care sheets to the right > , also BOTH types of waters must be dechlorinated using a dechlorinator, use API or the ZooMed Part 1, i use zoo med dechlor and have had no problems,its about half and half of which one people on here use (the salt water condition is bad though, I believe its part 2)

I actualy seen three of my crabs out yesterday just befor ei went to turn the lights off so maybe ... whatever has been going on ... is done with? lol I am just glad I seen some sign of life other then mysterious holes appearing and disappearing.

Yeah, Jacques and Sebastian have both been mostly topside the past few days for me. Odd... Marie is still down there, but I'm kinda curious what she is up to because she's been chillin under the salt water dish the past few days. All I could see was a tiny bit of her shell through a little hole leading into a cave she's made whenever I change the water, but I'm starting to wonder if she's up to more than a little fun tunneling... Oh, and the rescue is still down under in the ISO, but he's starting to scritch around after being down for over a week. He better have molted!! ~*shakes fist jokingly*~

yeah I know how that is lol...mine are acting like molting but this is crazy =)

I have tunnels and huge holes and sand dumped int he water dishes and food dishes everyday!

See my resurrected thread "hiding crab". I have so much digging going on that my tat looks like an ant farm. There is no more room for any more tunnels. All of them are digging like crazy.

I only have E's... Now I understand what everyone was saying about how active they are! I have to fix the tank when I get home every night because it's it absolute upheaval. Funny thing is they are mostly topside now, but I guess they tunnel when I'm not around. ~*shrugs*~

Still have yet to see Marie topside... Maybe she is molting...

And the little rescue is still dug down but I can still hear him scritching... I hope he's eating his exo and surfaces soon.

I was hoping they didn't have mites (as suggsted by my Aunt~who knows nothing about this stufff) not that I do...but is it possible they would be digging like this to get to away from mites? I don't see anythingcrawling around..and I hope since many others have tunneling and digging going on it is seasonal right?

Only thing I noticed was that it all started on the evening of the last full moon, it was like "crab new year". They were all going nuts. We are approaching the winter solstice Dec 21. I do know that these things do trigger some response in many life forms. This is my 1st year with crabs though, and I have no reference as to what their internal clocks may be saying. Mites are not an issue. They would be carried with the crabs wherever they would go.

~*shakes head*~ Mites are most likely not what is going to make them dig. They have this big shell haning off of them for the mites to hang out in so digging would be pointless. And crabs just dig for fun. Don't worry about it, just enjoy looking at the tunnels along the glass and revel in that feeling of joy everytime you do see them topside.

My two little e's are topside now. I still have two pp's that i haven't seen in quite some time. Waiting, waiting, waiting.

yeah i figured they didn't have mites...but i had to be sure.

I seen afew cuties out today and din't see any mites onthem...Actually...Mystique the new girl looked light she molted.

I a happy I see them again...but most are still under.

You know, now that you mention it, my "kids" have recently started digging too. Before their molt (Back in November) they would sleep topside in their coconut hut. Now one of them go's back to his molting burrow and buries himself and the other one goes into the hut and buries himself inside of it. My third kid is still molting somewhere in the tat so I'll have to wait and see if he ends up joining the merry diggers.

I know mine are showing up more now but dig right back down again! I am worried cause Ihaven't seen Batman for a long time my rug and he may have been disturbed from a molt with all this digging. i hope he is ok!
