Adopted 3 PPs today

Post by CallaLily » Sat Jan 03, 2015 2:15 pm

I don't know if anyone will remember how I adopted my mom's last two hermit crabs in Aug 2013. She had adopted out all the others to friends of the family (really I might as well just call them family!) a few months before that. Well those friends contacted me on Thursday. They're moving and unable to take the crabs with them. I picked them up this morning along with supplies and a 55g tank. All three are female and in great shape. :D

Here are links to pics. I know recently some of my links don't work for everyone so if anyone that can see them could copy&paste the IMG codes for me, I'd appreciate it. Sorry for the hassle. Tapatalk still won't let me post pics and my phone doesn't work well on/with photobucket either.

Edit: Some ideas with names would be helpful too. :)

Thank you so much, Hermitcrabdc! Don't know what I'd do without you! :D
They are all around medium sized I would say.

Congrats! They look great. And I'm sure the extra space is welcome. :)

I've been wanting to ask for like forever - where do the names come from? I'm assuming fantasy book series, but I don't recognize most of them.

Books mostly. Some from movies. If I hear or see a name I like I usually search it up and write it down. Some crabs did already have names when they came to me too. These three names I just love, though I did read a series where the main character was named Aisling (Aisling Grey). Salma Hayek...need I say more. Aoife I just happened across while searching for names. My favorite name site is behindthename.com.

The crabs still with me today....

Collins is after a football player, Nick Collins.

Elanor, Niphredil, Athelas, and Taniquelasse (Tani) are all plants from Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings).

Cinnamon and Rameriz are just random names some of my boys picked.

Chunk is from the Goonies.

Algaliarept is from the Hollows series (aka Rachel Morgan series).

Lettie is from Howl's Moving Castle.

Dola is from Castle in the Sky.

Emerald, Montana, Cannonball, and Popcorn were already named when I adopted them.

I could very happily list all the crabs I've had but I don't want to bore you. Some were within the themes listed above. A few were from the Inheritance books.

Meant to respond to this earlier. Yes! Sylvie is going to love the extra space! I've already got some cleaning done on the 55. There's a few areas I need to work on more....salt build up and removing the silicone from the built in pools. Plus I need to pick up a proper lid and locking clips. I'll probably have to get another or a larger UTH too. She'll be able to stretch all the way out.

(she's been in the 29g terrarium her previous owner had for her)

So far these guys have been doing well in my tank. Active, shell shopping, and getting along with the other crabs. I think it helps that the 5 PPs I already had in there were recently new to the tank too. Not that aggression is common with my PPs....just I was surprised how easily these crabs merged in with the others. Fingers crossed that the peace continues. Gally is also well and active. I'll be nervous through those first molts in this tank though.
In other, frustrating news, our power has been off and on all evening. Thankfully it's hasn't been for very long stretches so far. :|
