Week 3

Post by AcerCrab » Mon Jan 19, 2015 12:52 am

We already have a family with 2 beagles, 2 cats, 2 rats and have now ventured in the world of Hermies. Before adopting our 3 little PPs I have spends hours and hours reading this fantastic site and getting the Crabitat ready. Our 3 new family members came home and 2 promptly filled up at the water bowl and then went under. Our smallest, Hermes (my son has planned to name them all after Greek Gods) has dug in each day and come up at night to eat and party. We are hoping our other 2 will so rejoin us so we can get to know them and pick out their names.

Thank you. I tried to post a pic of my little guy I took with the iPad as my Avatar but I was unable to. Any ideas?

I think you just need to resize, right? Are you getting an error or something?
Stuff is generally easier on the computer. However inserting pics in a post seems easier on Tapatalk, to me.

I still haven't figured out how to post pictures. We now have 5 crabs who have small ping pong ball sized shells. 2 of the first 3 went below right away. The shy one icomes out at night. Our 2 newest were enjoying the pool tonight. We really hope they don't head below right away because staring at an empty Crabitat is like looking at the old test pattern on a black and white TV.

I just watched the most fascinating thing. Even though I have read people describe how crabs change shells it isn't until you watch it that you realize how cool it is. Poseidon, a crab that I just got, had a broken beat up Gray turbo shell that was so small that he could not get his whole body behind his pincer. Tonight I watched him select a new shell, measure every dimension for at least 10 minutes and then like a gymnast on the pummel horse swing his body out of the old shell and into a bigger, tawny coloured turbo. But.....then for the next 50 or so minutes I watched where he checked out his new home but kept turning back to the old shell like he wasn't quite sure about his pick. I finally had to say goodnight. I am sure there is lots of projection that we humans put on these crabs behaviours but it was just like watching someone buy a new house. I am definitely hooked.

Yeah...lol...with my guys it's like let me measure 100X and feel every nook and cranny for holes before I go, and then I have to stay close to my old shell because I don't want anyone to grab it if I get buyer's remorse.

But it is adorable.

She'll changing is definitely the best! These animals are amazing!

I watched one give himself a bath with his cleaning appendage last night for half an hour. He would lift up one claw, scrub under there, then the next and so on. Fascinating to watch!

When Poseideon came up tonight s(he) was wearing a grey turbo about the size of the tawny one I watched him put on last night. I wonder how much of the night she spent trying on shells.

LOL...probably 90%

I just saw something really cool too. I have blue led moon glow lights on my tanks at night. The angle keeps my little guys in the dark inside the hides to help them feel secure. I happen to see a little tiny bit of motion in the center hide. TINY little blue dots the same color as my LED's. It was the reflection of my LEDs of of one of the little guys pupils like a cats. TOOOOOO COOOOOOL for school. So excited.... :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

My 2 newest crabs are both sporting Babalonia shells. One left a tiny turbo and the other a tiny pica shell. They now are in shells that look almost twice as big as the old ones. Too funny. From what I read I figured they would not be even interested in the Babalonia shells.

Now entering week 6. All of the crabs(5) have gone down. The first 2 went under on day 2. How long should I expect ping pong ball sized crabs to stay under for a moult? Staring at a decorated Crabitat, monitoring temp & humidity, changing the water, filling the food dishes for phantom pets is getting depressing. There were 3 that did at least venture out at night for about a week, dig through the food dish, have a swim, and play in the shell pile but now all is soooooo quiet. It is good thing that our dogs, cats and rats socialize. :(

You can keep food at bare minimum. Mix a dab of honey and peanut butter. Put it in an eggshell half, and place it by the heater. The paste dehydrates and keeps well. It provides protein, sugar, and calcium. Then just hold feeding until someone begs for it! Hahahahaaaaaaaaa
But to answer your question. At 6 weeks, you should see someone soon. Any day, really.. They're near the surface, tunneling and sitting in mini caves, trying out their new exos, brushing their hairy legs, waiting for new colors to come in.. You will be pleased

Brushing their hairy legs, sounds like winter in the north.
