Glass Tank Lid

Post by Jimmy » Fri Nov 07, 2014 4:05 pm

Hey guys. I bought a new glass lid for my forty gallon breeder tank as a gift to myself. Like an idiot, I didn't notice that the lid came in two pieces for a tank with a center brace while my tank doesn't have one. I wanted to ask for some ideas on how to possibly make it work or do you think it would be easier to just return it. Although I don't want to have to ship it back, because that costs money and I am not rolling in dough at the age of 15.

Glass Tank Lid

@Jimmy, sounds to me like you have a forty breeder with a sliding top system this style of lid support uses rails on each end of the tank that the mesh lid is supposed to engage with which holds the lid in place.Since this style of lid support doesn't have a center or cross bar you can't use standard lids with it the lid system is technically proprietary to the tank manufacturer so other similar sliding lids from different brands typically don't work this is a marketing scheme to make you have to order replacement lids from the manufacturer of the tank which will cost you a little more money.I would say to return the glass lids as I don't see a way of being able to use them with the style tank you have unfortunately.

OR you could build a top lid to go on your tank if you know someone who is remotely handy with building things. Make a wooden frame to fit the top of the tank and put the glass on it.

My tanks isn't one of the sliding ones. It simply has nothing on the top. I was thinking that maybe I could have a center brace cut out of wood to go across the center. Then just put the two parts for the lid in as they would fit for a tank with a center brace.

Glass Tank Lid

Bummer! I have a 55 gal tank and it has the brace in the middle. I had my pet store order my glass lids.I had to have 2. He said I could use one big long one but I said no I wanted two smaller ones cause I wanted two ways to get in the tank, easier to handle and I can set two light fixtures on it. I saw them in the pet shop, he had a tank like mine..told him I needed new lids but I wanted those..Yep these were$ but I love them!!! I'm glad he had a tank like mine cause I probably wouldn't of known what to buy. If you make a cross bar so you can use them make sure the material you use is thin enough that your lids can still sit on the inner lip of the tank my cross bar isn't thick, so bet you could use a piece of thin plexiglass and tack it down.
