Temp spiked to 90 for a few minutes will my crabs die.

Just got my uth today so I thought I'd splurge and indulge in turning on my window air condition and turned the uth on for them. I read in bed and kept getting up to check readings on crabs' hydrometer/ thermometer combo all of the sudden their reading was at 90 for temp and 70 for humity( in hind sight this may have been because uth was right behind thermometer I moved it after the incident) this couldn't have been the case for more then 5 min. Max before I started to fix it and things improved. Will they be ok?

Yeah you got a false reading because the thermometer was too close to the pad.Its always recommended to have the heat pad mounted opposite of the thermometer to prevent false readings.Hermitcrabs experience daily highs in the 90's in the natural habitats so we know they can tolerate temps up to the mid 90's in the enclosure the problem is the lack of space in our very small enclosures compounds the effects of high temps and humidity on their bodies which includes increased mold/fungal growth on the body and in the gills. If the mold/fungus is allowed to openly and freely proliferate on and in the crabs body it will quickly suffocate the poor crab, this is why we have to keep a delicate balance of temp and humidity in our enclosure so as to slow or even prevent the rate of bodily mold/fungi growth.I have personally seen my 121 gallon get to the 98-99 degree mark for a very brief period of time(our air conditioning system went out for a couple of days because the coil froze up) and have a humidity reading of 80-85 percent and my crabs were the most active they have ever been because they tend to thrive more in warmer temps.I actually had to unplug my heat lamp and uth pads to get the temp to drop into the upper 80's and then as the day progressed and the evening set in the temps naturally dropped a little more.I live in the deep south and here we have very hot and muggy summers so when the A.C. goes on the fritz you know it.lolHaving your temp spike for a short amount of time wont kill your crabs though it might stress them out a little.
