Introduction - Bonk

Post by Bonk » Mon Nov 30, 2015 7:19 pm

Hi all!

I have joined HCA today, and I thought I would give a good coverage of my crabbing life for you all. Before I do that though, I would like to note that I was with another forum, but lack of conversation provoked me to change to HCA (I had always read awesome articles here!).

Tank: 160 litre (40g - tall) that is more of a cube than anything else. It is a Reptile One tank with opening front doors, some may be more familiar with Exo-terra; they are very similar. I have incorporated a glass piece at the front for a substrate raise up to average 7 inches across the floor.
Substrate: Mix of washed/screened play sand and coir/coco fibre from Bunnings.
Water: 2x 500ml glass bowls w/ pebbles siliconed onto to side for easy access, fresh and salt water (aerated with bubblers). Both are dechlorinated, and my salt is reef-quality. (I own a freshwater aquarium, so I'm pretty on-top-of-it with water quality).
Food: Dry mix with organic: cereal grains, seeds, nuts, dried fruits, shredded coconut, seaweeds, etc. Fresh dairy, fruits and veggies offered. A rotating lot of proteins: bloodworms, black worms, Mysis shrimp, krill, mealworms (as well as beef/chicken/lamb when I have it for dinner). Calcium is in the form of crushed (more powdered) oyster shells that is sprinkled over their food each night and a "chew pit" which contains broken oyster shells, pumice rock, pebbles, driftwood, cuttlebone and egg shells.
Environment: Humidity is at 75%+, heat at 25 degrees Celsius+ with my 20watt heat mat insulated on the side of the tank, and a small 50watt heat lamp (not a CHE, a moon-glow bulb), additionally I have a UVB lamp (which to be honest probably needs to be replaced soon).
Shells: Over 200 shells, most from a massive order I placed with Deltona Seashells this year for my birthday. They are rotated through the (sphagnum) moss pits each week.

Crabs: 10. All Australians (I have seen strawberries ONCE selling for $70ea), have moulted and changed shells with me. Owned originals since 2013, now quadruple their size! (Sizing off of chart given here. Interesting note, I think it is literally impossible to find jumbo Aussies - never seen one). Summer has got them revved up into hyperactive mode, all I here all day is clanking from my bedroom.
Rescues: Zipper, Rainbow, Gumnut: small. Boho: teeny.
Quality pet-stores: Polly, Gillana, Salvatore: my originals, came as large micros, now large smalls. Twinkie, Egg: big mediums
Dodgy pet-store: Cadet. Small large.

I am looking forward to discussing tons of interesting stuff on here :D Thanks, Bonk.

Hey,
It's awesome to see another aussie member on here, welcome to HCA.
..find jumbo Aussies - never seen one
I could be wrong, but most aussies grow to a max of a large bordering onto a jumbo. the largest i've heard of is around a tennis ball. Compared to other species, aussies aren't that big. :)

Thanks Aussie, I'm interested to here that they may generally be a smaller species - if a tennis ball is around the largest then my biggest I reckon might be getting pretty old! Also, I was reading through on how to wack up some photos in the pictures thread, and it says that you need to use an outside photo 'hosting site', I don't have any of those listed, so I'm guessing I will need to get one to be able to do this?

Yep Bonk, you'll will need something. Many people here use photobucket, imageshack or some other photo sharing site. i personally like photobucket as it's user friendly plus there's a lot of space for images.
