How does this look?

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

After discovering it was raining inside Crusty’s crabitat this morning and finding moisture inside the hydrometer, I am now testing its calibration. Again. It was stuck at 85% humidity, but I think the tank was closer to 100%.

I pulled the lid off and let the excess moisture evaporate. The lid is back on and hopefully more normal now.

Luckily the thermometer seems accurate as it reading is similar to my laser thermometer and the sticker one on the side of the tank.

Also, the log bridge/second floor had a massive mold bloom over night, so it’s now gone. I’m working on getting some egg crates to build another climbing structure/hide.

The plastic grid “beach” had straightened overnight so back in the boiling water it went and then it was tied in position to maintain its shape as it cooled. It’s now holding shape.

My husband told me this morning “for a pet you said you didn’t need or want, you sure are getting attached to your kids’ pet.” ImageImage

I’ll admit, I’ve fallen for this little creature. She’s a ton of fun and I get to have some creative license with the crabitat. Image

Gone is the log bridge. I’ll build something for her as a second floor here soon.

How does this look?

Sister post to this update is in the Facebook group.

We’ve gotten quite a few supplies delivered in the last week. With more to come next week. Shells will be arriving Monday, some more craft supplies to build climbing structures are arriving later this week.

More CF will be ordered Friday morning to give her more sub to dig in.

We went from single floor, to multi-floor.

Image
Second floor structure glued together with hot glue. I ordered all the supplies in this update from Amazon. Links provided in the verbiage.

Structure material:

Pomeat 4Pcs Aquarium Fish Tank... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WRMC786?re ... b_ap_share

Then covered it in moss. I got the sides covered tonight after much deliberation about moss or other material. In the end, I decided on moss.

Aquarium filter grid:

Moss sheet:

Galapagos (05248) Sheets of Real... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KZDT4CM?re ... b_ap_share

Gone is the UTH under the tank with a “dumb” controller (rheostat) to a digitally controlled one mounted to the side of the Crabitat.

Bare sides on the second floor walls and large moss area added. Crusty loves chewing on and playing with the moss.

Image
The manufacture of the heat mat stated that it can be insulated over if desired temperatures are not reached in five hours and you are using an electronic controller. For now I made a thin blanket from a puppy potty pad to go over the top to help hold in the warmth. I’ll make a better blanket soon. The humidity can be adjusted by how much of the lid vents are uncovered. This also effects heat as well, unfortunately.
I received a digital Thermometer/ hydrometer from Amazon as well. It calibrated out perfectly at 75%
The thermometer is accurate to within one degree centigrade. The hydrometer is actuate to within 5%RH. Image
On the left is the controller for the heat mat. The heat mat is attached to the right side of the tank, next to the wall. The old mat, mounted under the tank is no longer in use and the cord has been cut off to prevent any errors in connecting mats if the tank is moved. Extra moss not yet added in this photo.

Thermometer/Hydrometer:

ETHMEAS Digital Thermometer and... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076M5WCR7?re ... b_ap_share

UTH and controller:

iPower 6 by 8-inch Under Tank... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079LY7JPK?re ... b_ap_share

Crusty has kept her pants on for a couple days now and we’re hoping she’s happier. Once we get more CF and shells, I’m sure she’ll be much, much happier. She also may have a friend after we get this all corrected.

This is all so great and very happy to hear she hasn’t been streaking in a while, lol! The tank looks super cool and I’m sure she will love it once it’s all said and done. It’s so much fun, isn’t it...decorating their crabitats?! I love it! Crusty is a lucky little crab with everything y’all are doing for her .

Thank you!

She’s chilling in the hide this morning. I see evidence of where she was up on the second floor at some point during the night.

I’ve gotten the heat mat set up at 95°, which puts the tank temperature right around 75-85° depending on where she is in the tank.

She definitely has a warm basking zone and a cooler zone to play in.

I like Super Mario steps and flagpole! "Sorry, crabbies but the shells are in another castle!"

I know totally non crab related! I thought about making a Mario themed crabitat several times! As far as I got was adding Lakitu to my background!

Hahaha!

I thought about Mario theming the crabitat, but I chose to go with a more natural look. Or living is set up as a gamers cave as my husband and I are both into games. Electronic, card and board games.

I have more supplies that arrived today, so more changes will be happening the the crabitat to further enhance the look.
