Hermit Beach

Post by westflorida123 » Mon Aug 21, 2017 10:56 am

Today I was ordering some supplies from Drs Smith and Foster for my other critters and I flipped to the Hermit
Crab Supplies. Usually I do not buy anything from this website for the crabbies but they have a new item called
Hermit Beach. I wonder if this would work, it seems like a nice product at a reasonable price at 6.99 for 6 lbs.
I know playsand is more economical* Mix won't cling to your crab like calcium carbonate "sand"
* Mimics sand most land hermit crabs use in their natural environment
* Promote natural tunnel digging & healthy molting
Unlike the calcium carbonate "sand" often sold as hermit crab substrate, this premium blend of natural sand, coconut fiber, calcium carbonate, sea salt mix and probiotics is the superior choice for healthy land hermit crabs. The silica sand packs well and the coconut fiber helps with water retention. Calcium and sea salt replicate the exact sand hermit crabs find in their natural environment. Finally, probiotics (beneficial bacteria) help maintain a clean environment.
Hermit crabs are natural diggers. They dig to hunt for food and when it is time to molt. It is very important to fill your crab's habitat with enough moist sand for the molting process. The deep moist sand protects your crab during the molting process and prevents dehydration, which is vital for your crab's longevity.

but this seems ok? I checked and they also have it at Chewy for $4.99. Any thoughts. :|

Still not anywhere near as cost effective as a 50lb bag of playsand for less than $5

Keep in mind that a 50lb bag of playsand will be enough for a 10 gallon tank. Gives it a good amount of substrate.

I have 250lbs of sand in my 55.

So let's say $7 for 6lbs of this Hermit Beach...I'd need about 40 bags of it to provide adequate substrate.

40 × $7 = $280 (without including tax)

5 × $5 = $25 (250 lbs of playsand)

It's playsand and cocofiber premixed, and I think a little calcium thrown in. It is safe, but it is no better than making your own!

Although it is extremely awesome for a company to put out safe supplies. :) I really like Fluker's.
