My dilemma...

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

My dilemma...

Post by fandt94 » Sat Aug 18, 2018 4:01 am

So, over the last 2 nights despite good humidity and temp conditions I have noticed that when my two in the new tank are done eating, exploring, etc, the hunker down on the substrate or maybe a little in right next to the UTH along the back wall. Should I assume they prefer it warmer or what!? Currently the temp is 84 towards the front so it has to be warmer where they are now....both are PP’s and even when it went to 86 at the back they kept going back there. Currently I only have the UTH insulated with foil and cardboard and temps between 80-86 all throughout. Do my crabs like it hot like I do!? Lol. I love heat...hotter the better....I’m strange.

My crabs do the exact same thing and line up against the back wall next to the pad under the incandescent heat source. My one E who was on the cooler side of the tank last night walked to the other side and dug right in. I think they just want to be where they want to be and they’re moody haha. BTW my tank runs about 90/85 in the heat/humidity range so I know they can’t be cold.

What kind of guage do you use to monitor the temp? Where is it located?

I personally prefer digital. They are very accurate. I like this one. Measure humidity and temp for $8. Runs off of 1 AAA battery. You can purchase it at Walmart or on Amazon. At Walmart they are in the Home Improvement section by the air filters.

I use an analog one right at the center on my tank on top of my UTH. My tank is in the basement where it’s usually way cooler than the rest of the house. So right now the entire back glass has a UTH a long with a tiny UTH on one of the glass sides. I have a hood that can fit two bulbs. One bulb is a jungle UVB bulb and another is a blue incandescent bulb 50w. All 4 have gone under two are gone probably to molt cause they are complete gone can’t see them at all. The other two come out daily to eat and climb and back into their holes.

And I really like that digital meter you gave the link to it’s in my shopping cart now. Where should be it placed and do I need more than one?

The problem with using bulbs as heat sources is they will make your humidity evaporate. That is why we recommend UTHs.

Edit: I just use one. :)

I have a digital Acurite for the new tank and I have been moving it around to test out the different areas of the tank. Currently it is on the left side of the tank halfway between the front of tank and the back.
