Remove and re-use Zoomed UTH?
Remove and re-use Zoomed UTH?
My father in law has a bigger tank that I can use and I was wondering if I could remove my ZooMed UTHs from my current tank and put them on the new tank? I read that I shouldn't, but then some people say I can and just use aluminum tape to put them back on if they don't stick. And, I think I can't insulate the zoomeds so I didn't know if taping them was kind of like insulating?

Those heaters are adhesive-backed, and while they aren't meant to be removed, they still can be if you are cautious not to get any sort of debris or touch the backside. I have taken these types of heaters of tanks many times in the past, but I recommend ultratherm heaters over adhesive-backed ones because you can attach them with tape and they are easily removable.

Is it recommended by Zoomed? No.
Have I done it? Numerous times. Just be careful.

How did you remove it and what do you use to reapply it?

Very slowly and evenly peel it off.
Then I used Relectix tape on the ends to tape it back down. That is an insulation / heat tape. I've also used duct tape.
Ultratherms are the best heaters ( www.reptilebasics.com or www.beanfarm.com ) - but I've received adoptions that have given me zoomeds. There is no sense in wasting them.

The danger is that the pads are not well constructed, so bending or pulling at them can damage the heating elements inside, which can leads to shorts and potentially fires. Since they are encased, you won't be able to see any damage.
I've done it as well, but there is a good reason why they say not to!

I have zoomed uth on my backup 10g. most likely you will loose adhesive once you took it off. i had to tape it up on a new tank. make sure you dont cover entire pad up.
