Dead or Molting?

Post by Lexirod » Fri Jun 04, 2021 7:16 pm

Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
4-5 inches, coconut husk

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
80 degrees, waiting on humidity gauge in mail, but I do allow the humidity to grow enough for there to be condensation

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
Heat light, LED, white/blue

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Fresh & Salt available, bottled water and salt water solution

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
Fruits, blueberries and carrots are their favorites, dried shrimp, pellets (I tried other foods but they prefer pellets and fruits). Replaced every other day

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
Ive had dundie for about a year, I’ve had mifflin for a few months

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
Dundie has molted once a few months after I got him. Mifflin attempted to molt but lost a limb and claw doing so (this was a few weeks ago, not sure if this was a molt issue or fight because mifflin’s leg and claw were found under the substrate).

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
6 gallon tank, sealed lid to maintain humidity

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
2 small crabs, smaller than a golf ball, larger than a quarter

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
About 5 extra shells, they both have fun changing shells and hanging out on top of them

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
No

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
Once a week-every two weeks, mixing substrate as salt water can harden it, spot cleaning, etc

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
No

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
No

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
I try to not handle them too much, dundie was doing great until mifflin came along, not sure if dundie tore off mifflin’s leg and big claw or mifflin struggled with molting. Mifflin was very shy when I first got him, now he is the most active. Dundie was beyond active when I first got him, he loved to explore and climb. now that mifflin is here, dundie buried himself more and I don’t see him much.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
Aside from mifflin losing a claw and leg, dundie is the main concern. Dundie tends to bury himself under food/water bowls or under the decor to the point I fear he can’t get out. After mifflin arrived, dundie became more shy but still active and eating. I recently moved homes and After the move, I waited a few weeks before checking on dundie since he was buried. As I was cleaning the tank, I saw dundie was buried again. I moved the substrate to check if he was okay, but his legs were hanging out of the shell and he was not moving. I assumed he was molting so I put him in his hide (both crabs have their preference on hides and maintain their own homes). This was almost a week ago, dundie has still not moved. I do not pick him up or mess with him, because I fear I have disturbed his molt. Mifflin continues to move around fine without his leg and big claw. I provide honey and peanut butter (organic of course) to help him. But my main concern is dundie. There is no fishy smell aside from their dried shrimp and he is not responsive. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have grown quiet fond of my little hermit crabs and need any help I can get :)

Keep him under the hut till you smell a fishy smell. Put some food under the hut with him.
