3 Down: what to listen for

Post by hermitsinnc » Thu Sep 22, 2022 9:15 am

I currently have 3 small-ish crabs in a 20 gal tall (I know it's not the best, but it was all I had room for).

This would be the first molt since I've had them for the big 2 (Maxwell surface molted already).

Kendall (biggest) went under at the beginning of August.
Maxwell (smallest) has been under since his surface molt, although I have seen him a couple times and I've seen his teeny footprints. Because he just molted, I'm pretty sure he just likes to dig.
Mitchelle hung out on the top for a while, but did go down last week.

Full disclosure: I've done my best to provide hides and climbing materials, but right now I'm mold-treating most of them since nobody's up.

Now that all three are down, I'm anxious about them running into each other underground. Last night I did hear some sounds: mostly scritching and digging. I've been told that the sound of a crab in distress is a 'chirp'. For those of you who have heard it, what exactly does it sound like? A squeak? I did hear a sound like a squeegee on glass (once), but decided not to do anything about it.
3 PPs: Maxwell (small), Mitchelle (medium/small), Kendall (medium/large)
also have 10gal freshwater fishtank w/ neon tetras, pygmy cories, and nerite snails

There's been lots of times where I've mistaken the sound of my hermies digging for chirping, chirping is louder and higher pitched though; here's an article I found useful, it says things about hermit crabs chirping, and it has a 30 second video at the bottom of a hermit crab chirping :)

A crab chirping underground doesn't always mean that they are in distress or that they need to be intervened with. So even if you heard them, you may not need to take any action!
