Re: Crab semi-surface molted on purpose?
I've had this happen before with small crabs, it's like they know they can pull a quickie safely in either the shell shop or the moss pit and they just go for it. Usually it's super fast molts, where they're done in 5 days or less. They should finish up 90%+ of their shed exo and be up and moving ar...

Re: Tank depth…
Double doors? It'll be safest to run a strip the entire length of the front so that if both end up opening there won't be any spills.

Re: Tank depth…
Can you cut a strip of plexiglass or even plastic from a cheap tote to fit against the front, so deeper substrate won't fall out when you open it? That's usually what is recommended for front opening tanks so that good substrate depth can still be achieved. It's not pretty but very functional.

There's also a collection of topics towards the bottom of this post, including a link to my Sunshine who survived. It'll be touch and go for a few days until you can observe and see if he's eating and rallying eneregy, or if he's still going downhill. Unfortunately with newer crabs limb loss is almo...

Re: Is Laminaria safe?
Laminaria as a seaweed dried for human consumption is safe. I wouldn't give them anything made for external use.

Re: Acting weird
That's pretty normal crab behavior, they don't really do all that much, just find a spot and hang out.

Re: Weird smell
Yeah, it should be. It's always made me feel uncomfortable since the crabs are stuck in the tank with it, but it can take months to years for the smell to completely go away so there's not much of an option. If the plants are cleaned and kept away from heat it should be alright, mine have never show...

Re: Does he need a bigger shell?
It's a marine hermit crab, so he's able to go to the source when he's in need of a larger home. That shell hes wearing now though can last him for years!

Yes! You've got Ruggies. They should be okay together, but I will say I house my Rug separately from my other crabs and she's going strong at more than 7 years now. Most exotics live for 2 to 4 years in captivity and I have to wonder if it's because of the way they interact with other species. Purpl...

I have both the ultratherms and flukers attached with packing tape. Sticks great, safe to remove and reposition as needed.

Re: Can I use sea salt for SPS coral?
Yes, it's fine for hermits! Any of the salt mixes will work since hermits don't have exacting needs aside from something that recreates ocean water. Products like this exsist because there's two types of saltwater aquariums - those with corals, and those without (fish/invert only). When there's no c...

Re: Whats your preferred heat mat brand?
One Ultratherm is probably your best bet as they come in a 35x6 and a 35x11 size, depending on how cold your home gets. They produce the most heat and can be insulated for a boost which you'll likely need since the tank is so wide front to back. I use Flukers as they have the same design and can als...

Re: crab hasn’t changed from painted shell
Are you sure the types of shells being offered are something they'll like? They can be picky about not just the size, but the shape and the weight.
