Re: Food Help

You don’t even have to buy foods special if you don’t want to. Many foods you buy for yourself can be offered to them, as well.

And, sadly, not available in the commercial pet trade. Definitely for the best, though!

Re: UVB?

On a related note, I think there was a study that found that some insects do produce Vitamin D3 in the presence of UVB. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326441112_Evidence_of_Vitamin_D_synthesis_in_insects_exposed_to_UVb_light However I have no idea if crustaceans can do the same. Re: Shell too small

Sometimes a crab just likes a snug fit. However, if you think it’s lethargic it may have chosen a lighter shell that’s easier to carry simply out of physical weakness. If you suspect the latter may be the case, I’d recommend filling out a help request template. We can use it to determine possible pr...

Re: Salt

I get it all the time. The only time I didn’t get the residue was after mixing it overnight in a bucket with a powerhead for my kreisel tank.

Re: Update on crab adoption

How do you tell the difference between an Indo and a PP?

Sorry, I don’t see Indos very often around here.

Re: Good Pellets?

You want to make sure that any commercial foods that you provide do not contain the following ingredients: ⁃ EQ or Ethoxyquin an antioxidant ⁃ Copper Sulfate ⁃ BHT, also known as butylhydroxytoluene Kilimanjaro’s nutrition article also mentions other compounds to aboud such as zinc oxide and ferrou...

Re: Good Pellets?

Nearly all commercial pellets in the US contain some preservatives (listed or not) and questionable mineral supplements.

It’s better to just avoid them. Your current blends sound good to me.

No, although I would avoid anything with seasonings or table salt.

I would keep them separated until they’re both done for now. You’ll know they’re ready when they’re both eating and drinking normally (post-molt crabs will forego food and water while their exoskeletons harden).

They know when to stop. Hermit crabs tend to seek out specific nutrients when needed and will stop eating when those nutrients are obtained.

Re: Sliding Glass lid?

A glass top will be good. Air circulation isn’t that important with hermit crabs, as they will get new air whenever you open the lid for maintenance.

Re: New member, new crab owner!

Three things that I notice right off the bat: 1. The sand should be at least six inches or three times the height of the tallest crab to protect them from each other while molting. What kind of sand are you using? Also, the amount of crabs a tank can carry is measured by the surface area of digging ...
