New Crab Owner and Clueless!

(I bolded the questions that I have, the rest is just update/discussion I guess.) Update: The crab I bought in the painted shell changed last night! It was late and I was asleep, but when I checked on them in the morning he had left it! I can't find him so I'm assuming he's hiding in one of the hid...

Re: Crabby pictures!

Would it be possible for you to transfer over to some fresh foods? Hermit crabs LOVE fresh proteins, fruits, and veggies! :) How many extra shells do you have? How big were the two that were fighting? Usually the shells fights happen if a crab has a shell another wants, or it’s because they are jus...

Re: Adding Substrate

Carefully removing them is probably your best bet. If there are any little caves directly underneath them you may have to put it off.

Re: Hermit crab stays in hut

Sometimes hermit crabs just want some time to themselves. If DJ is moving around, it’s likely he’s still eating and drinking.

Otherwise, are the temperature and humidity within range? If you’re concerned your crab’s going into lethargy you could submit an emergency template in the Emergency forum.

Re: Isopod Control

I would recommend breeding them in a tote or separate aquarium and only put small amounts in the tank. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk That’s what I was thinking. My crabs live in a 55-gallon tank, but my fear is that I’ll put in ten isopods, get lazy with inspections, and find they number in th...

Isopod Control

I’ve been doing research on breeding isopods for hermit crabs, and I have to say I’m interested. However, I’ve also heard a lot of stories about isopods overpopulating their crabitats. Are there any ways to keep them in check, or patterns in tank maintenance that can promote heavy breeding? The only...

Ecuadorian Carotenes

I've noticed that the HCA care sheet for Ecuadorians notes that they sometimes change colors in captivity. This has also been noted in other forum topics regarding E care, and seems to be treated as a normal occurrence. However, I've noticed that Hermit Crabs for Dummies states that turning blue or ...

Re: Packaged frozen fish

I don't know about carbon monoxide, but salt used in food is often table salt. I don't think I'd risk it, either.

Re: New babies! Are they Ruggies?

It looks like it has the candy-corn shaped eye stalks of an Ecuadorian. I'm no expert, but it looks like an E to me.

Re: Prime and Ammonia

That's good to know. Also, I found this article from the Crab Street Journal about using Prime. It basically says to change the water on a regular basis, but also suggests treating the water right in the bowls. http://crabstreetjournal.org/blog/2018/01/09/updated-method-treating-water-prime/ I treat...

Prime and Ammonia

According to the SeaChem website, Prime will bind to ammonia for about 24-48 hours. "Prime will bind up those compounds for up to 48 hours. If they are still present after that time frame, they are released back into the water, unless Prime is re-dosed accordingly. Also, if your ammonia or nitrite l...

Re: My crabitat

It looks very nice, just make sure you sanitize the sponges daily. A few questions: 1. How deep is the substrate? It's hard to tell by the pictures. 2. Are the water dishes deep enough for the crabs to get water into their shells? 3. What's the normal humidity in the tank? Your hygrometer was showin...

Re: Hermit Crab Crunchies

Check the ingredients list closely. Ethoxyquin is usually listed if it's in the food. These "Crunchies" do have a lot of preservatives, though, so I think plain peanuts or similar foods may still be a better choice.
