Sometimes if the seeds were heat treated or otherwise processed they may not sprout well but it’s worth a shot. Some garden centers will sell chia or other seeds for sprouting if your stuff doesn’t work.

Re: Cicadas?
They’re edible, but be warned that sitting in the ground for seventeen years gives them plenty of time to absorb any chemicals used around them.

Re: Cleaning unused shells?
I find boiling helps get water into the coils, but a good rinse will also suffice in a pinch.

Re: Etsy food mixes?
Variety is best. A mix is nice since it offers a bunch of things at once but if you’re on a budget you can do the same thing with table scraps and miscellaneous goods from the pet store. It’s good that he took a shell, but that is odd behavior.
If you can find some suitable ones locally, either in a craft store or beach gift shop, great, otherwise you’ll have to order online (Naples and Richard’s Sea Shells are both good sites).

I’m not a fan of American fish meal. Low quality stuff with hidden synthetic preservatives.

Re: Snails/Pesticides!!
I highly doubt that you caused any harm in any way. Could the snails have picked something up? Perhaps if their host plant was treated (though I imagine any molluscicides would have killed the snails if used correctly), but even so they wouldn’t be carrying much, and even less would be on the cork, ...

Re: Mason Sand
Pool filter sand is purer and more thoroughly washed. Mason sand is also washed and screened, though, so I don’t see an issue with it.

Re: Crazy stupid grain/food mite population explosion! Help!
They live in our homes so they tend to come and go. Reducing the amount of fresh food you offer and removing within twenty-four hours will help reduce their food supply. I think you posted in our Facebook group as well? Using fruit or veggie slices to attract and remove them does work. Sent from my ...

Re: Mood moss
Moss absorbs pollutants from water and air so it’s hard to make it “crab safe” if it isn’t already.
If it’s farmed or collected for animal enclosures it’s probably fine but due to the lack of regulations among amateurs Etsy is a wild west.

It sounds like she’s passed away.
The fact that she surface molted means there’s something wrong, either she didn’t think she could burrow or she’s ill or injured to begin with.

You can get larger pools with inclines made for snakes, if that’s the aesthetic you’re after.

Incense and gills?
We don’t really know how irritating incense can be for them so you’re right to be cautious, but I think you can get away with it with sufficient air flow.
