Re: Breeding Idea by KyMart

I understand that, I am talking more about increasing egg numbers per year to hopefully get more to land, a lot of the eggs don't make it, whatever stage that be in, but if there where more eggs each year, aka more breeding, captive breeders would hopefully be able to land more captive bred babies....

Re: New crabs recently surfaced, aren’t going in water pools

We got four hermit crabs a couple months ago, and within the first couple days they all burrowed and we didn’t see them for quite some time. Within the last week, 3 of the 4 have come up and seem to be doing well! My only concern is that they haven’t gone into the water pools, and I’m not sure what...

When a hermit crab molts does it look dead before it moves?
It can definitely seem that way, but it's always recommended to try your best to help them recover until you get confirmation via a fishy or seafood smell

A crab that is molting only needs it's exoskeleton to eat. Once it has eaten that and is moving around inside the isolation area, other foods can be offered.
Whoops shouldve read more carefully before replying affirmatively, sorry about that! /gen /npa

Re: Where to buy ruggies

Hi wa looking around online but can't find ruggies for sale anywhere. Does anyone have any or know where to get them? HI! very difficult, practically impossible, in the US sadly. You will have to stalk adoption forums here, on facebook, and maybe even Craigslist to wait for an owner who is no longe...

Re: New to hermit crabs and molting

Hey there! I added some feedback marked with mylk 1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Play sand and I put more in it last time so they could borrow if they wanted. mylk - great! 2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are the...

Re: Breeding Idea by KyMart

If this was the senses talk that was part of crabcon 2022, this was done in collaboration with Kelsey and myself. And yes, crabs hearing is distinct from ourselves, but in a way, very similar! I actually was not referring to that particular talk but it sounds super interesting and I will be sure to...

Re: Walking the crab

My rule of thumb / code of conduct for myself is "at a snail's pace" or no faster than I think a cloud would move to cast a shadow over them, since they do encounter shadows in nature. there are holes in that particular comparison but it does help me to have more amicable interactions with them! Doe...

Re: Walking the crab

Ooo ill have to try that! Also, I have to admit, I have a weird obsession. I do like hermit crabs, but that is not the obsession I'm talking about. TINY WOODEN SPOONS! I absolutely love them. I also got a tiny wooden spoon from an order for my crabs, and instead of using it for their food, I kept i...

Re: Walking the crab

Loved these stories! Just wanted to add an idea for scaredy cats like me who are still working their way up to confidently using choice based handling! -- Hand feeding :D I just use the lil wooden spoons that came with etsy orders and its a 2-in-1 win of cuteness because 1) watching hermits eat!! an...

Re: Conversation About Mold by KyMart

I dont have a strong opinion either way, but it boils down to the fact that no one really knows. LHCOS openly adopts a "better safe than sorry" stance while the HCA's stance is "based on anecdotal proof, there doesn't seem to be urgent risks" (both paraphrased ofc lol), but neither group claims to h...

Re: Breeding Idea by KyMart

Interesting! I was wondering about sound with them, very cool! I know right? I had more questions (how do they distinguish vibrations? DO they distinguish them? How do they percieve them??) but there's not enough time in the world to get inside another species' head to the extent my curiosity wants...
