By mixing the substrate with dfw or dsw to sandcastle consistancy. When you squeeze it, it holds its shape. But if it drips water it's too wet so just add more substrate.
Ahh, I see. I thought maybe you dug test tunnels or something XD

About a "cannibal" crab?
Yes, and whether they can ever be trusted to be among friends again. My crab has also shown cannibalistic behavior in the past (before he was my crab). So I would be curious to hear more thoughts or similar experiences. :D

We make sure that tunnels won't collapse and harm the crabbies.
How do you go about doing this? My biggest worry about owning a hermie is that my substrate consistency won't be right and it will cave in on him DDD:

Re: Popcorn fanatics!

Mine are also popcorn fanatics - every few months or so I air pop a batch, grind it roughly in the food processor, and then divide out cup-sized amounts and mix those each up with different amendments (e.g., one batch gets mixed with kelp powder, bee pollen, coconut, powdered cuttlebone, and ground...

Re: Is my crab too anti-social?

I took great care in setting up his tank to meet all of the guidelines, EXCEPT him having a buddy. I just don't want him to be lonely or depressed.

Re: Is my crab too anti-social?

Another good idea is to get crabs larger than he is, so they can easily defend themselves against Maui. Larger crabs need bigger tanks, which also make it hard. How big is Maui? I currently have a 10-gallon, it came with him at adoption. In-shell, he's right between the size of a golf ball and a te...

Is my crab too anti-social?

I adopted my (first and only) hermie from a woman looking to rehome him. It sounds like she had everything right, as far as humidity/temp, substrate depth and consistency, plentiful shells, enough room, etc. But he had originally lived with 3 friends and he brutally massacred them all. She tried to ...

Here's mine! sing it love songs every other Thursday. XD

Deep enough for the crab to bury. A couple of mine sleep in theirs during the day.
I'll have to make some room for that, I think he'd really enjoy a squishy soft spot!

Re: Moss pit maintenance

Thank you, that's what I needed to know. I didn't want it to be something where I have to provide it a certain amount of natural light, fertilize it, and sing it love songs every other Thursday. XD

About how deep should it be, relative to the crab?

Re: Rearranging decor

Boil new items in dechlorinated water for about 20 minutes before putting them in your tank to sterilize them. I usually let them fully dry out before putting them in, but I'm not sure if that's necessary.
