molting/bug issue

Post by crabs_lex » Thu Aug 06, 2020 1:17 pm

hi
wasn’t sure where to post this under but i have quite a few crabs in my 55 gal and lots of them dog under and only come up at night and there are other don’t ever see (so assuming their molting bc the tank doesn’t smell) and now i am having a little big problem with little gnats or flies

i really need to clean out my tank bc it’s smells so much of fruit (bc their diet) but i cant seem to get rid of the bugs (and i’ve tried all sort of traps) and i can’t rush disturbing molting crabs

Have you stopped giving the crabs fresh food? Just give them dry food until the bugs have disappeared. That should help get rid of fruit flies at least. I'm not sure about any other types of flying insects.

If you are bringing fruit in the house for you to eat, I'd make sure you give it a good wash as soon as you bring it home. This will help eliminate any insect eggs or insects colonizing on the fresh food.

Hopefully that will eliminate their food source for you.
