Does everyone's crabs try to escape all the time?

Post by DarthKrab » Fri Jan 27, 2017 10:22 pm

Aside from eating, drinking, moss munching, and what not of course. Is this normal?

Also, I've read about crabs comparing sizes. I've had four crabs for a year now and I haven't seen this yet :( I'm hardly ever in the same room so I can't say they haven't done it. Just that whenever I AM in here I've never seen it. And I've just sat here for quite some time every now and then admiring them and laughing :P

Yes. Yes crabs always want to escape. And they have a particular genius for it.

I was going some cleaning of the tank and took the lid off. Turned around for two seconds. When i turned back rose had climbed all the way to the top and was one step from falling out the tank.

Before I got wheels my hermits used to climb all over my tank. They don't anymore. They just want/need exercise.

The first week of ownership I had three out of four get out. I had no idea they were such talented escape artists. I discovered they were out when I heard weird sounds rustling at night. Freaky! I'd get close to the sound and suddenly it would stop. Took me a while to figure out I wasn't going crazy or being haunted.

The tank they're in now is too tall to scale and has a double lid (one is mesh for ventilation) just in case. I know they're meant to roam miles but there's nuttin out here for them!

I made my own lid & discovered that if the mesh isn't metal, ie. is just terarium subtrate mesh and not wire, they can worry the material with their claws til it freys, then chew through.

i velcroed the entire lid down because they were strong enough to lift the whole hood.

Lol- the only experience i have had with escapees is when one of my mediums, Orchard, got hold of the little sensor cord I have for the hydrometer/ therm and climbed her way up and pushed through a plastic strip I had covering a gap in the lid!

Honestly if any of ours escaped, some of my family members would really freak out So, I have the FW spray bottle and a container full of beads along with a large, fairly heavy stone, sitting on top of our tank. I followed what GB did and added the hamster wheel in our tank and Mike, our only crab that is up day and night, is the only one who has figured out how to use it. He is molting now, but when he was up, he was on that wheel almost all day and night! Truly so fun to watch!!!!

I really keep meaning to get a hamster wheel, but I always forget when I'm shopping on amazon, or in a petstore. I really think my crabbies would like it! :) You guys have cute babies!
