Pacing?

Post by platypuskid2 » Tue Jun 20, 2017 6:48 am

I'm simply curious but I mentioned to a friend that a few of my crabs were pacing the perimeter of the terrarium and she said pacing meant they were stressed but they aren't showing any other signs of stress

They need exercise as any other animal. It doesn't necessarily mean they are stressed. Many do lapsnaround the tank perimeter daily.

#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.

It is a sign that we have them in too small an enclosure. For how much they wander on a daily basis in nature, we don't have a chance of recreating that. Even in a four or six foot tank, they still wander the perimeter on a regular basis. All we can do is provide the largest enclosure we can for them, and give them as much enrichment as possible. I think that's why Carol of Crabworks always did so well, she would leave them out for hours to wander the house every evening, she said if she didn't they would trash their tank overnight from pent up energy. The "stress" from pacing can be a lot of things in animals, but for crabs it's compatible to a dog in a kennel, if that makes sense.

I've never noticed mine 'pacing'. Do you have a modified hamster wheel?? Mine will walk in them for hours at a time.

Daws beat me to it...I highly recommend the modified hamster wheel!!! I have 2 in my 100g, 1 in my 75g, and 1 in my 55g. They get used nonstop!

I'll have to look into this, it seems like it'd be pretty funny to watch a crab in a hamster wheel. Could you explain the modifications to convert a hamster wheel into a hermit wheel?

Ya know... A few months ago, I had the same exact question. Basically all you do is buy a silent spinner (hamster wheel) , some zip ties, and some plastic mesh/canvas. Then drill holes in the wheel and connect mesh to it with the zip ties... Here a link where GB describes it: http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/ph ... 2#p1025412 She also has good pics of them, just go back through the topic.

Night before last I went in and three crabs were using one wheel. It was going slow, but it was going. Now that is teamwork
