UTH

Post by crabby33 » Mon Jul 30, 2018 9:02 am

I need to get a new heater. The ZooMed ones I had crapped out and I threw them away. It’s summer here in Dallas, TX so there is no need for extra heat. My apartment stays at 76. I have a fish tank light with a reptile Tropi-Sun 2.0 and I have the lid sealed with seran wrap but I will need to get a new UTH for winter. I have a 20 Gallon tank. I plan to buy from either Reptile Basics or Bean Farm. So what size will I need for a 20?

The usual advice is to measure the back of your tank that is above the substrate and get a size that fits the closest without going over the tank edges. At least for the bean farm ultratherm, which I recommend.

Depending how how warm/cold it gets it can overheat the enclosure. I think at full on it will heat to about +20 degrees room temperature (I think that's what the instructions had said). If it doesn't get warm enough you can add insulation. If it gets too warm, this simple thermostat has worked well for me and is available on Amazon:

If you are referring to a 20 gallon high, then the best fitting ultratherm would be the 6x23 :)

Temperature difference using a UTH is dependable on the surrounding room environment; drafts, temperature, fluctuations and windows all have an impact on max temp in the tank (not to mention tank size/UTH size/brand).
