New crab question

Post by Arkos » Thu Mar 11, 2021 11:23 am

So, I saw a crab last month when I went out of town to pet smart for more prime and IO. He was pretty big, the biggest ive ever seen in a store, I knew he had to be several years old and I just couldn't stand for him to have lived so long only for his life to end in that terrible tank. So I took him which is what prompted me to expedite the new tank setup as I had no room for the poor guy. I crowded him in with my other hermits in their small 10 gallon for about 2 weeks while I waited on sub and the important stuff. My others I think got evicted from their tunnels lol they spent most of their time in the surface hides after levianthan came along. Now that my other three are in the new 40b, he's all alone in the 10. Space, humidity, and heat are good now, but he hasn't come up still, he's been down for about 3 weeks now. He was extra hairy and brightly colored when I got him which leads me to think he had recently molted. There's no death smell, but I smoothed all the dirt out and the bowls are completely spotless so I know if he comes up at night and so far I don't think he has. Any suggestions on coaxing him out?

New crabs usually go down to either de-stress or molt right after you bring them home. At this point I don't think there's a way to get him to come up, probably just going to have to wait it out sadly.. but that's my own opinion, I'll let others chime in.

I would just wait too.

I waited. 1 month to the day, and levianthan has finally come up for drinks and food. I caught him as he was scuttling away into his fake log hide :D he seems to be alive and well. Just as soon as I can catch him without stress I'll be scooping him up to his new home. As it's the first time he's been up at all, I don't wanna grab him tonight. I've made sure the water bowls were spotless every change, and checked them every night so I could use the dirt tracks to pinpoint when he came out, definitely was today sometime.

Edit: levianthan was out in the open just hanging out all the way inside his shell and I figured I would never get a chance to get him so easily again. So he got transferred and is currently exploring his home. He seems quite curious :D

Yes me too, he's even more hairy and bright than before. I think he just immediately stress molted when he dug in the day he got home. Which correct me if I'm wrong but if he did in fact successfully molt, that should clear him of the PPS risk right? Anyway he's found a cozy corner in the dollar store hide I made and seems to be loving the fake plants and over all big cave feeling of it, hoping for more activity tonight :D

Sorry for the kind of poor quality, my phone is the only camera I've got and it's not the best lol. However, here are a few shots of levianthan I managed to get. As soon as he was comfortable he found the shell pit and changed to this wonderful striped tapestry from his beat up old shell. I did get a couple good ones when he sat in the only spot with clean glass lol. The others are more for size reference, the burlap he's climbing on is from a six inch role. And I would say his big pincher is roughly the size of a nickel maybe a little bigger. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

And now I feel like I need to share the pictures I've got of my others. The littlest is chucky, the one in the painted shell is cheech (he's had it for almost 2 years, it was huge on him when I got him, hopefully he switches when he's up from this molt and sees 20 new shells) and the one in the tapestry is chong. The fourth picture is a bit hard to see but it's the only photo I have of my first 3 hermits all up at the same time, it was just a few days into the tank being set up.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
