Surface molter

Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
Mix of aquarium sand (not calcium) and ecoearth, 7-8 in

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
Yes, they are in the top right corner. It is consistently 85-90 degrees and 85-95% humidity.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
Yes, we have 3 large stick on heaters on a 29g tank to keep the heat at good levels.
*edited to add that 2 are stuck on the back wall above the substrate, with one on the opposite side of the tank from our heat gauge*

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Salt and freshwater are available and deep enough for each crab to fully submerge. We use instant ocean and prime.

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
Dried mealworms and brine shrimp, a large selection of fresh fruit and veggies, raw, unseasoned bits of meat, unprocessed nuts, always have access to cuddle bone and they love a boiled egg in it's shell. Sometimes coconut oil as a treat.
They eat better than I feed myself most the time

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
5-6 months. It's a purple pincher.

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
Yes! We had a surface molt last night and luckily caught it first thing this morning.

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
A 29g glass tank. We cut corrugated plastic to fit for a lid.

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
4 crabs, this one is our smallest and is a small crab. He shares a tank with two medium and a large crabs

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
12-15 are in the tank at all times, if not more.

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
No.

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
We do not "clean" anything in our tank except water changes every 2 days. The substrate gets a thorough fluffing and rewetting when all crabs are up, at least every 8 months.
Food scraps are removed every few days when it starts getting stinky. Some of our guys love moldy food

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
No.

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
Recently added a plastic hamster wheel but seems irrelevant to this situation as our guy surface molted the same night we put that in.

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
Unfortunately, we were having a humidity issue. That is when we went from a half broken glass l8d to corrugated plastic and UNFORTUNATELY had to fluff and rewet our substrate. It was nowhere near wet enough and I was afraid our crabs were going to suffocate. We were down in the 60% range.
This little guy was buried but we were lucky to be able to gently lift him out without hurting him (that we know of) and replace him once the substrate was better. He climbed behind a coconut hut and stayed there for two days. This morning, the third day, he had molted behind the hut. He was tucked back into his shell and thankfully was undisturbed.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
We have our little crab in an iso container in the main tank. He is currently chowing away at his exo :) my main concern is when will he be safe to return to the main tank without being cannibalized? I feel so bad that we disturbed him and probably stressed him bad enough that he felt he needed to surface molt :(
We never dig our crabs up around here but it seemed like suffocation or digging them to get their humidity stabilized again. The tank is looking good back at 93% humidity and we are looking into tips on how to not have that happen again.

Any info on when he's safe to go back in the main tank would be appreciated!

Hi!

It sounds like he may have been getting ready to molt when you moved/dug him up. It probably stressed him out. Once he's eaten the majority of his exo and appears to be more energetic and vibrant looking, you can probably put him back in with the other guys.
To keep humidity up, try using a glass top. I use glass lids for both of my tanks and they really help keep the moisture in. My humidity is always in the 90-99% range in both tanks.

It sounds like you are doing exactly the right thing for him, keeping him isolated while he eats his exo. Like CL77 said, you will want to wait until he is moving around normally. And when you do re-introduce him, consider a quick dip in the fresh water dish, so he doesn't smell 'freshly molted' (when they dig back up, they scrub the smell off, if they molt underground).

Thank you both!

How do we go about a freshwater dip? Just a literal quick dip in their pool?

Yw! Yep, just a couple second dip in the pool will work.
