Hi! My name is Alycia and my son Jett (8) just got three crabs for Christmas from me (don’t tell him that though). He did some basic research prior to asking for them as a pet and I spent many weeks pouring over much of this groups forums to get ready for them. Most of the upkeep will be done by me with my so. Shadowing/helping out so he learns about them with me. They live in his bedroom.
So, here goes! As I said we bought 3 crabs. They are currently living in a 45 gallon tank with sliding metal mesh top. It’s about 18” tall and I think the substrate is about 5-6” deep. It’s pure coco fibre soil as I read that it’s personal preference. I thought I’d try that first and buy play sand later on if needed. I have two water dishes (one for salt and one for fresh) that are doubled up Tupperware with rocks in between for east changing. I do have plastic craft mesh for ladders. I also have a large moss pit in there as well about 6-8 extra shells. One of the crabs we bought actually switched shells the first night we had them in their new tank. It has a 20”x10” seedling heat mat on the side but due to cold weather where we live that wasn’t doing the job so we have a heat lamp on the top as well. My hot side seems to be hovering around 27celcius and my cold side is around 19celcius. So far we are having trouble keeping a consistent humidity so we are trying to mist twice a day (in the morning before the light goes on at 7am and after the light goes off at 7pm).
So far I think the biggest mistake I made was buying a “variety diet” hermit crab food thinking I could combine this with fresh. We started feeding them fresh food tonight (hempseed, quaker Oats, orange, beets, green beans, and a giant stalk of broccoli) with some calcium +d3 powder.
I’m not sure how to post pics from my phone, if anyone knows how of if it’s possible, please let me know.
Also, questions!
Is it safe to handle them?
If yes, do they get more accustomed to their humans and therefore less afraid when we’re around? (I watched a video of a guy giving on of his crabs a broccoli leaf and the crab basically took it right from him). One of our crabs seems nearly fearless, my son calls him Hercules, but the other two are very shy. I just wonder if with enough handling or acclimation they’ll get used to my son so he can enjoy seeing them move around more and/or handle them more (if it’s safe for him to do so without stressing the crabs).
Thanks in advance! So glad to be able to start posting, he is absolutely head over heels for his crabbies and I’m right there with him!
