Does size really matter?

Is it a bad idea to have say one large / XL in a tank full of smalls? Do larger crabs bully just based on there size?

Nope. I have some really tiny crabs and a couple mediums/larges and never have trouble. The only issue I run into is the little guys getting trampled since the bigger ones don't watch where they're going. If anything, I think having different sizes reduces the chance of shell fights.

I agree with Megmaholm. I have housed teeny all the way up to jumbo together. The only time my jumbo bothered to do anything with the smaller crabs was when he flicked some of them out of the food dish to let them know they needed to wait their turn (normal dominance thing). IME, it's more likely to have trouble with crabs of similar size.
