Introducing myself

Post by MamaKelly » Wed Mar 23, 2016 2:50 pm

Hello,

I joined just a couple of days ago. This is the second time I've had hermit crabs. The first was many years ago when I was in elementary school (not going to tell how many!) and my family has had two now that we rescued from another family locally. We got Thing One and Thing Two about a month ago and Thing Two has been under to hopefully molt for about three weeks. Thing One badly needs to molt... he's missing a walking leg but has a really nice gel bud there.

Well, nice to meet you and hope to have these little guys for a while to come. I've always missed the crabs I used to have, though to be honest, I didn't know enough to take good care of them at the time :(

I suppose I could also mention that in addition to the two hermit members of our family, we have two cats, a dog and four human kids running (or crawling/toddling) around over here!

Welcome to the HCA! :) We'd love to see pics of your setup! I hope you enjoy your hermits as much as I do mine. I'm assuming you already have, but the basic care guide sticky is a great place to start for newbies-just reading old threads and stickies is how I learned most things. :)

Hmm, I'm not sure how to post a picture. At least I can't figure out on my phone. Right now they're in the 10 gallon tank they came with, though I want a bigger one, so it's pretty basic.

I started reading all the FAQs before I found these crabs advertised online. Tons of info there!

I need to get the big guy out of his painted shell, but haven't found one yet he likes. Pickings are slim at our petsmart.

Looks good, as for shells joannes and Michael's often sell bags of shells with some pretty good shells in them, or check out Naples sea shell shop online, or Richards seashells. Both have lots of beautiful options for a pretty reasonable price.

Most of the decor came with the crabs. I'd really love a larger tank... Maybe someday! At least I got rid of the corn cob bedding they came with right away! I figure I've got some room in the learning curve if they survived a year of that. The smaller one has been down nearly four weeks. I hope it makes it! The big one is hanging out in a pit he's made. Hard to tell if he's stressed from being alone, PPS, preparing to molt or what. I'd love to see him get his leg back!

Thank you for suggesting JoAnns, I got some great options for my smaller crab there, he came with a shell that was way too big, but not so bad after the molt, I don't think.
