New Rescue Gecko

Post by wodesorel » Mon Nov 19, 2018 6:51 pm

My friend who owns that pet store had a father come in and ask if they would take his kids' geckos because the kids lost interest. Both were dehydrated and skinny and being kept in improper and appalling conditions, but one kid used calcium with him and the other did not! So I got the call asking if I could take them and rehab them, especially since my friend is on vacation the next week and a half with her family. The one seems okay other than being skinny, and is eating, so the staff at the store is going to fatten him up. I'm grateful, I am so out of space!

This little girl came home with me. I got her loaded up on pain meds and calcium supplements and she did eat a cricket for me but I can always do powdered if needed. We'll wait and see how it goes, she is severely injured from the metabolic bone disease and stuck sheds. I'm not getting my hopes up as I've lost them in the past as getting them healthy can be dangerous when they get to this point. ImageImageImage

I just dont understand how people dont see that their animal look deformed. If anyone can give this little one a loving home, its certainly you Wod!

Best of luck with the little guy!

I don't get it either. Maybe because they were both looking similar it never crossed their minds? My friend and I had both assumed the other gecko was in really bad shape, she was out of town and her sister had sent her pics which she then forwarded to me, but in person he wasn't horrible. I thought this one had a worse jaw than she actually does. To go from a baby to this maybe didn't set off red flags??

I dunno. Still waiting on her to defecate. That may be the deciding factor on if she has a chance. I switxhed feom insects to Carnicare just to be safe, and also syringing water. I've never had one quite this bad before and am trying to decide what is humane. One front leg is snapped clean, and it looks like one lung may be compressed. I think a two and a half hour round trip to one of the reptile vets (because she needs a specialist, no regular vet would touch her at this point) would be too much on her.

I figured out why she's slumped sideways though, she sleeps jammed into the corners of the tank. My friend reported she'd never had any hides - the tank was a tiny aquarium decoration and a water bowl. Her body eventually melted into a 90 degree angle.

How sad. It infuriates me when people get animals and don't properly care for them. She has such a sweet face. Nothing deserves to be treated like that. Thank you Wode, for once again looking out for these beautiful creatures. :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

That's terrible. Too many people don't do the research, and too many shops are just looking for a quick sale. No child should ever have their own pet because most of them will see it as another toy that can get tossed in the corner when they loose interest! If this was a dog or cat these guys would have been cited for animal abuse. Even if it was brought to the attention of the proper authorities they would not do a darn thing because it's a gecko. Unfortunately most smaller, "insignificant" creatures suffer from speciesism. Sorry but all animals should be treated the same and have the same rights weather it's a dog, cat, snake, gecko, turtle, crab, chicken, fish, cow, whatever. Enough of my rant.

If anyone can get him better it's you. He is in the right hands now! How is he doing now?

She's doing exactly the same, but is defecating on a regular basis so everything is working as it should. I'm trying to temper myself, it takes a LONG time for reptiles to heal due to being cold blooded. The reptile vet said 18 months for broken bones in some cases. With The Kid, the first month he had no changes. He didn't start acting more normal and showing actual personality until around three months. I also have her on strong pain meds in the hopes she just rests and recovers for now, so she is mostly sleeping. The fresh UVB bulbs arrive today which should offer more help.

As far as animal cruelty, if she had been Cleveland, humane agents would have gone after them. They have a stronger system in place. It's really hit and miss in other places. In my county we have no active humane society and haven't for years. It's on the sheriff to investigate, and the most they have done is a few high profile dog cases. No cats. No horses. There have been some major abuse cases involving both and also livestock, and the department won't even acknowledge it.

I lost her on Sunday night. :( She tried to shed overnight and just didn't make it. It's odd how much they are like hermits in that respect.

I am bummed, but also relieved that she isn't suffering anymore. It is such a hard judgment call when they get this bad, and it's only worth it if they come out on the other side okay.

I'm sorry. I know you did more than what most people could/would have done. Only if you would have gotten her several months sooner. They also have no way in telling us how much they are really hurting either. At least she is not suffering anymore and experienced some love and compassion before she passed.

Thats really depressing to hear that she didn't make it. What is certainly comforting to me is that during her last days, she was offered the best care that would be possible - and hopefully had her last days as painless and lived life to the fullest - and in correct care!

Wode, I’m so glad you do rescue work. Not just for hermits, but for other animals too, including reptiles. I think pet stores also give horrible advice for leopard geckos. Calcium sand is dangerous for these guys too, but in leopard geckos, I’ve heard it can cause impaction when they reach out to grab crickets. Judging by the pictures of the now deceased gecko, she was never given any calcium supplements or fed. Calcium is very important for reptiles like it is for hermits.
